Hi, I was in Greece ages ago, and I saw this MASSIVE sign saying "Macedonia IS Greece". What does that mean? Do Greeks wish it was greek?

North Greece was former Macedonian land who was ocupied by Greece after the Second Balkan War in 1913. Now they want the rest. After me dead!!!

Macedonia is a geographical area between Greece, Bulgaria and the now non existing Jugoslavia.
Geographically speaking, Greece has 61% of the area, 19% goes to Bulgaria and the rest went to Jugoslavia.

Summary :

In 1945, after the end of World World 2, the current borders were set and the Jugloslavian leader Tito, changed the name of what is known today as FYROM from Vardarska to Macedonia, obviously having terrirorial claims against Greece.
At the time (1945) Greece was advised by the Allies to not provoke Jugoslavia for the name of the area in the name of good neighborhood and mostly in order to not cause more conflict since the world has just started recovering from the big war.

When Jugoslavia was split in the different countries about 17 years ago, the name dispute came up again.
The temporary solution was to name the country with the most... reasonable name :

Former
Yugoslavian
Republic
Of
Macedonia.

Even FYROMian leaders at the time claimed that the current residents of the country have nothing to do with Ancient Macedonians.

Historical summary :
Ancient Greeks tribes were proud of their roots and their cities.
The Macedonians, The Thebans, the Spartans, the Atheneans, the Myceneans, the Epirotans, the Corinthians etc, were not different nationalities.

They all spoke Greek, had the same beliefs, the same religion and in times of great danger they all united to face the common enemy (for example Persians).

Alexander son of Philip, was the very first Greek that managed to unite all Greeks under one rule and set his goal to fight Greece's largest enemy, the Persians.
His goal was successful and he built an empire so big and strong that the world at the time had never seen before.
His military tactics were resourceful but his empire did not last long after his death.
What remained after his death was the spirit, the Greek language was spoken throughout the empire and for many years after and the countless cities named Alexandria (the most known today is still there, in Egypt).

Administrative structure of Greece :

For administration purposes, Greece is divided in Peripheries :

Attica
Sterea Ellada
Thessaly
Western Macedonia
Central Macedonia
East Macedonia and Thraki
Western Greece
Pellononese
Ionian Islands
North Aegean Sea
South Aegean Sea
Crete

Geographically speaking I reside in Epirus which belongs to Western Greece.
Hence... I am an Epirotan.

I am not of a different nationality or ethnicity compared to other Greeks.
Same as in being... a Texan, a Californian, a New Yorker etc... etc.. etc..
The same goes for the residents of Macedonia. They are Macedonians (for example the residents of Thessaloniki).

History of Slavs settling in the area today known as FYROM and surrounding areas :

In the late 6th century AD, as Byzantine control over the area disintegrated, the region was increasingly settled by various Slavic tribes from the north, such as Draguvites, Bersites, Sagudates, Smoleanoi, Rynchines and Strymonoi.

Summary of FYROM :
They claim that they are direct decendants of Alexander the Great.
It would be acceptable but there is one big problem and a minor one :

The BIG problem :

The Slavic tribes settled in the area in the 6th Century AD.
Alexander the Great's era of ruling was... 300+ years BEFORE Christ.
So there is a continuity and a genealogical gap of about 900 years in this claim.

The minor problem is this :
FYROM's population today is comprised by approx 40% of Albanians on a total of about 2.5million people.
Are they decendants of Alexander as well?

FYROM today has over 300.000 Serbians living there today.
Are they decendants of Alexander as well?

FYROM today has over 200,000 people of Greek origin living there today.
As far as I know, they are the only ones that can possibly be called Macedonians.

The remaining Slavic origin population is claiming the 900 years continuity gap to be non existent.

In Greece today, there is about 3 000 people near the border with FYROM that speak a Bulgarian dialect as a second language.
If those people feel FYROMians they are free to go to FYROM.
But a population of 3000 people is not enough to establish a claim that the entire Macedonia Periphery is an occupied land by Greece.
The entire population of Macedonian Periphery is of Greek decent, they feel and they are Greeks.

Of course, FYROM tells them that what these people have known for thousands of years is a lie.
And of course they don't believe them.

So.. whatever is left of Slavic origin in FYROM today, is attempting to forge History as theirs.
Some excavations in their land have brought to surface ancient Macedonian state findings and inscriptions. All the inscipriptions are in Greek.
The FYROMian claim is that... (read this...) that.. since Greek was the most popular language at the time, all the official documents were also in Greek.

Well, the Romans considered it a high ho

Macedonia WAS Greece, wasn't it? Thousands of years ago, the area that now makes up Greece consisted of several small autonomous city-states, like Troy, Sparta, Athens and Macedonia.

Trek said it all.
You see Macedonia was a greek city -state just like Sparta or Athens.
Hundreds of years after that slavic nations came to the area. And now because they happen to live ina an area where a part of it used to be called Macedonia they think they should be called Macedonians too!!!! On top of that they have maps of the ancient Macedonia that has parts of Greece inside and they say that even these parts should be theirs!!!! They also stole the Vergina Sun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vergina_sun, a greek Symbol and put it on their flag!!!!! All that from a nation that is slavic and has nothing to do with the Greek culture or history......

The Mad Greek
The only wannabies are the the fyromians
80% of the ancient Macedonian kingdom is presently located within Greece's borders... We do not claim the fyrom or soon to be called Northern Macedonia... on the contrary they teach the old communist expasionism ideas of a greater Macedonia in the fyrom. Does the Fyrom wish to be Macedonians and by default Greek?

Hey there, are you a troll "wannabe"?

Nevertheless i will give you the benefit of a doubt for the first time and try to answer. The Macedonian naming dispute started with the break up of Yugoslavia more than a decade ago and has it's roots to issues started to form about more than a century ago. So this is why you saw something like that more than a decade ago.

Since Byzantium times slavs started immigrating in the region of todays Macedonia, most of them of Bulgarian descend. Those people lived along with Greeks and other races like Jews in the region for about a millennium, first under the Byzantium and then under the Ottoman rule.

In the beginning of 19th century and with the rising nationalism along the nations occupied by the Ottomans, the Bulgarians living in Macedonia decided to act on their own. They wanted to create a Macedonian nation in the place of the previous Ottoman occupied lands, in a way betraying both their ethnicity (the Bulgarians), and the people they were living together all these years (the Greeks), with an artificial ethnicity they made in their minds to serve such a purpose. Long story short in the following years Greece managed to occupy Macedonia from the Ottoman Empire and protect it's citizens there from the growing nationalism and the bulgarian(fake macedonian) gangs that acted in the region.

But in the events after WW2, the bulgarian slavs(fake macedonians) decided to pick up arms again against the Greeks, teaming with the communists to achieve their goals it in a bloody civil war. The result is they lost and most of them (but a few thousand) left the country at the time.

Greeks after that saw them as traitors and didn't allowed them to return. Bulgarians also saw them as traitors, and there was nothing else for them to stand but to the lie they made up, that they are descendants of the ancient Macedonians to have some pride left in them. My guess is that truth is too hard for them to accept, that in reality they are double-crossing lying b****** that got seriously kicked in the a** and nothing more. Yes it is a pretty lame history to learn, so they stayed true to the lie they made up to have some pride left in them, that they are descendants of the ancient Macedonians.

Problem is that till today they haven't showed any sign of getting over all this, although they now have their own nation, quite the opposite. Nationalism is extremely high, they now claim Greek lands as it is obvious in the answers here and they are among the most unstable countries in the region.

Macedonia will never be Greek, they are only wishing that.
I am gonna say one thing:Macedonia was, is and it will always belong to Macedonians.Macedonia is not Greece. The newest research proofs that Macedonians(today)are true and mostly descendants of ancient Macedonians.

Macedonia is a large territory which got occupied and divided by Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia during the Balkan wars. Only the Serbian part got independent, while we still have a large territory in Greece, Bulgaria and even some in Albania. So, Macedonia is not Greek, Macedonia is Macedonian.

MaCeDonIan PhaLanX
Yes, ofcourse they wish!
And there is nothing wrong in wishing something!
But for sure there is something wrong when you wish something that doesn't belong to you!
So that's why you need to post signs as the "one" you referred!
You write, then you read, then you start to believe what you have written...and the story...well you know how ends up!?
But unfortunately I must disapponted them: Macedonia belongs to Macedonias!
Greetings from Macedonia - the real one:)

p.s. Vasiliki I unblocked you! You want me to put you in my "fans"!?
Now I see why people dislike you! It's not because you are Greek, it's because you like to reply to other people's opinion! Why? Why? Why?
Do you know the rules of answers.yahoo.com?
p.s. "Because your answer got turned against you" - How!? Be kind to explain please!?

Historically Macedonia was shared by Bulgaria and Greece. There were always fights about were it belongs.
Macedonia, by the way doesn't want to belong to anybody,it wants to be independent,a democracy. By the way in Macedonia they speak bulgarian just with some differences, but mainly their language is bulgarian.
Greece on the other side refuses to accept the fact that Macedonia can ever be independent. The greeks strongly support that macedonia is only Greek(that is why you saw that on the poster).
