Nazım Hikmet Ran, the greatest Turkish poet of the 20th Century (together with Fazil Husnu Daglarca). He was imprisoned a few times in Turkey for being a 'communist'. After finding out that there was a plot to kill him, he left Turkey and went to live in USSR. He wrote numerous volumes of poetry. He travalled around the world but he could not come back to his home country, which he loved so much.
It is said that his poetry was influenced by Mayakovsky. He used free verse and had a natural talent playing with rhymes. His poems read like prose at times, yet one can see and feel the music there. He was a great master of the Turkish language and its sounds.
He is popular in many countries, including Greece. In fact, when the Greek junta seized power in Greece, the first thing they did was to ban his books/poems (together with books by Aziz Nesin, another Turkish author).
Nazim Hikmet rests in a cemetery outside Moscow, although in one of his poems he asked to be buried under an oak tree in Anatolia.

He loved his country but there was a time his country didn't love him--He lived most his life in exile in Russia.

Nazim Hikmet is popular everywhere.

I LOVE MY COUNTRY

I love my country :
I have swung on its plane trees, I have stayed in its prisons.
Nothing can overcome my spleen
as the songs and tobacco of my country.

My country :
Bedreddin, Sinan, Yunus Emre and Sakarya,
lead domes and factory chimneys
are all the work of my people
who even hiding from themselves
smile under their drooping mustaches.

My country.
My country is so large :
it seems that it is endless to go around.
Edirné, Izmir, Ulukıshla, Marash, Trabzon, Erzurum.
I know the Erzurum plateau only in its songs
and I am ashamed
not to have crossed Tauruses even once
to go to the cotton pickers
in the south.

My country :
camels, train, Fords and sick donkeys,
poplar
willow
and red earth.

My country.
The trout which likes
pine forests, best freshwaters and the lakes
at the top of mountains,
and at least half a kilo,
with red reflections on its scaleless, silver skin
swims in the Abant lake of Bolu.

My country :
goats on the Ankara plain :
the sheen of blond, silky, long furs.
The fat plump hazelnuts of Giresun.
The fragrant red-cheeked apples of Amasya,
olive
fig
melon
and of all colours
bunches and bunches of grapes
and then the plough
and then the black ox
and then : ready to accept
everything
advanced, beautiful and good
with the joyous admiration of a child
my hard-working, honest, brave people
half hungry, half full
half slave...

I think , Türkçesi!
"çiçeğini seyretmeliyiz onun,
birden bana sarılmalısın, gülüm,
korkudan, hayretten, sevinçten
ve de sessiz sessiz ağlamalısın,
yıldızlar da çiselemeli,
incecikten bir yağmurla karışarak.
Henüz vakit varken, gülüm, " N.Hikmet Ran
--------
this is for you ,bird , from Vladimir Mayakovsky;
YOU
You came –
determined,
because I was large,
because I was roaring,
but on close inspection
you saw a mere boy.
You seized
and snatched away my heart
and began
to play with it –
like a girl with a bouncing ball.
And before this miracle
every woman
was either a lady astounded
or a maiden inquiring:
“Love such a fellow?
Why, he'll pounce on you!
She must be a lion tamer,
a girl from the zoo!”
But I was triumphant.
I didn’t feel it –
the yoke!
Oblivious with joy,
I jumped
and leapt about, a bride-happy redskin,
I felt so elated
and light.

Nazım Hikmet ((November 20, 1901 – June 3, 1963) was a Turkish poet, playwright, novelist and memoirist who is acclaimed in Turkey as the first and foremost modern Turkish poet, is known around the world as one of the greatest international poets of the twentieth century. He earned international fame with his lyric power, through the "lyrical flow of his statements". He has been referred to as a "romantic communist" or a "romantic revolutionary". He was repeatedly arrested for his political beliefs and spent much of his adult life in prison or in exile. His poetry has been translated into more than fifty languages.

Nazim Hikmet has been very popular in Greece twenty years ago, when the majority of young people, mostly students, belonged to the Left.
His poems became songs composed by Thanos Mikroutsikos.
The most known poems of his are the one about the story of Bendredin, and the one about the red army in China.

genç türk
He has been under soviet influence a lot so I can call him a soviet poet writing in turkish. These are two poems he wrote for the same person, that is Stalin, the bloody dictator:
1.
llk önce kim kime
Metin ol kardeşim diyecek.
İlk önce kim kime
Baş sağlığı dileyecek.
Hepimizindi o, hepimizindir.
Yoldaşlarım acmızı duyuyorum
Sizin duydugunuz gibi tıpkı
Aynı şiddetle kardeşlerim
Hüngür hüngür ağlamak geliyor içimden
Seviyorum onu Marks'ı, Engels'i, Lenin'i Sevdigim gibi.
Sevdigimiz gibi Aynı muhabbetle
Aynı hürmetle.

2.
tastandi tunctandi
alcidandi kâattandi
iki santimden yedi metreye kadar
tastan tunctan alcidan
ve kâattan cizmeleri dibindeydik
sehrin bütün meydanlarinda
parklarda ağaclarimızin üstündeydi
tastan tunctan alcidan ve kâattan gölgesi
tastan tunctan alcidan ve kâattan
biyiklari lokantalarda icindeydi corbamizin
odalarimizda tastan tunctan alcidan ve kâattan gözleri önündeydik
yok oldu bir sabah
yok oldu cizmesi meydanlardan
gölgesi agaclarımizin üstünden
corbamizdan biyigi
odalarimizdan gözleri
ve kalkti gögsümüzden baskisi binlerce ton tasin
tuncun alcinin ve kâadin.
