Is Russia dangerous for tourists?

I am a university student (female) and I plan to do a university exchange to Moscow for 5 weeks this summer. My school, however, has warned its students that this could potentially be a dangerous trip (though they didn't give any warning about, say, Mexico). Can anyone shed any light on this issue? Why would Russia be considered especially 'dangerous' for visitors?

Thanks!

I am Canadian, by the way.

When it was the Soviet Union, then, yes, it used to. Nowadays people are very better, and they are very european. As I know, most of my friends like Canadians, and they are happy to help foreigners.

I think these talks about danger are just thoughts of "cold war" that was between the US and the Soviet Union may years ago.

I would rather take a midnight stroll in the city of Moscow - that a lunch time walk in the Mexico city.
Simple like that.
And I am 70 years old.

Russia in not a 3rd world country.
Of course it's not dangerous for tourists.

I am not Russian. I went to Russia on a Canadian passport and lived to talk about it. I get royally pissed when the North American authorities are issuing safety warnings. It is much safer to go to Russia than it is to go to most of the US cities. You will have to deal with the hustling taxi drivers and maybe occasional communication problems because Russians like to pretend they do not know English. Other than that you will be just fine.

Mexico on the other hand is much more dangerous.

Do not listen to anybody. Russia is a beautiful country and is very friendly to the tourists! Go and enjoy your trip - you'll remember my words later - it's going to be fun!

I assure you that nobody hate tourists. and American too.
nobody throw up you because Russia and America have some foreign policy problems. above you are Canadian!
I like foreigners. they other, interesting people.
and Russia haven't mafia, bombers, bandits, bears walking on the streets, etc...

sorry for my bad english :)

Alex P
No more dangerous then US.

Vlad
I' am from Russia and i like to help tourists and students with life here. it is helpfully for my english, and i wondered that you ask that kind of question.

Umm, your school is full of crackheads :)
(no offense)
there is nothing to be worried about in Russia, unless you are an idiot.
When in Russia, the same precautions must be taken as in America, although I'm not sure how Canada is. You shouldn't go down dark alleys by yourself, carry pepper spray, don't talk to shady people, don't trust strangers. Just your basic street smarts.
Good luck and have fun! Russia is a beautiful country! I hope you will enjoy yourself!

I haven't been to Russia, but to Ukraine and to India, two places that, like Russia, are probably a little "off the beaten path" for North American travelers. I would say that from what I've heard, Russia is similar to these places in the sense that you have to be a little more aware of yourself and your surroundings than you would if you were going to say, England or France. Although being aware of those things is never bad while traveling anyway. As someone else said, people can try to rip you off, which can happen when you're a tourist anywhere, but in Moscow some people are incredibly good at it. So just keep an eye on your belongings and be more wary of strangers than you would be back home. People in Russia carry themselves differently, they tend not to go around smiling at everyone they don't know, and some find it idiotic, even offensive, when others do so. They tend to be quieter and try to attract less attention to themselves when conversing with someone in a public place, like a cafe.

I think that the labeling of Russia as "dangerous" probably stems from old conflicts (and some new) with America. Despite you're Canadian, many people around the world when hearing you speak will assume you are American. I know several Canadians and their accents sound very close to those of Mid-Western Americans, so that could cause some anti-American sentiment to come your way. But basically, I think it's just a precaution your school has taken to avoid/lessen any legal responsibility for anything that could happen when you're away.

If I were you, I would go, I think it sounds like a great opportunity.

If your face is white. It's far safer than most capital cities.

Lets see I live in Russia & in U.S. Long story how, other then that I was born in Russia & went to school over there. Russian ppl don't really Americans, but there are few reasons why they would like u..Americans have money & Russians love money...so of course they'll talk to u. Cops are corrupted, if they pull u over then most likely ur gonna pay them off since ur from America. Ppl are rude towards everybody, including Americans..who are filthy rich ppl. At least that's what Russians think.

Russians are racist & they have biggest skinhead group in the world, if ur black..well then be carefull or don't bother going over there.

There are a lot of "fake police" to worry about. If you are driving a car and they see you have a foreign passport/license they will make up some strange charge just to get money of you for personal profit. Apart from that its a really nice country to visit as long as you stay in big cities. Outside big cities its not very up to date as mainly old people live there and there are some bad living standards there e.g. in a "derevne" some people still use well for water.

canadian is pretty close to american, so i don't know how much better off you would be, and just as in any bad neighborhood, you should be aware and observant of your surroundings, who you talk to, where you go (ie dont go walking through dark alleyways at night), what you say, etc. Try to stay in a group and in the safer parts of the major cities

spcop
only if you are from the US they tend to hate us there

HoHosareSICK
Anti-American sentiment there that has been increasing. Not even government supported, there are a lot of anti-Americans who want the old soviet regime back. I'd say Moscow is relatively safe, but you know after what happened in Mumbai, the danger of a threat lurks everywhere.

If there is a dangerous event, you will most likely get an email from the US Embassy alerting you of potential events.
