Russia, officially the Russian Federation is a transcontinental country, located in both Europe and Asia. Geographically, the Asian part is much bigger than the European part. With regards to its population, the European part is heavily populated comparing to the Asian Part. The majority of the population lives in the European part of Russia, including its capital Moscow, which is the most populated city.
The population of Russia includes many ethnicities, but the main one is Ethnic Russians, appx 80%, with Tatars making up appx 4% of its population and Ukrainians 2%. Politically and Culturally, Russia is considered to be a European Country, due to its ties to European Countries. Russians and Ukrainians are Slavic People, who are considered to be European, while Tatars are Turkic People. |

Russia is huge, it stretches like ten time zones!
The capital is near Europe, but the east coast is on the Pacific Ocean!
Traditionally it's called a European country, because it's pretty much part of "western civilization" which means it's not Oriental and not Arabic, and not black, I guess. |

it's a transcontinental country...it's cultural financial etc centre though is in Europe so i personally consider it as more European than Asian although the Asian part's surface is much bigger.cheers |

Both. Hence the name "Eurasia". |

it's both, called Eurasia to be exact. the population is mostly on the European size, while the Asian side is mostly used for mineral resources. |

Russia is the center of what is called Eurasia as it covers the entire northern border of Asia (60%) and 40% of Russia is in Europe. See Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia. Even though the two largest cities Moscow and St Petersburg are in Europe, scientists consider it to be "Eurasian."
There are 11 time zones. |

Europe is the left leg, Asia is the right one and Russia is between legs. |

Geographically its more asian then Russian. In terms of culture its more European and in terms of Population dispersion its also more European. Almost 75% of Russia is ethnic Russian with about 20% Turkic/mongol (mostly Tatars with some asian migrant workers) and 5% other European mostly Ukrainians. So overall Russia is far more European then Asian. |

It's mostly considered part of Asia, but
most don't think of the country as aSiAn.
Traditionally, when people think of asians - it's
the chinese, japanese, vietnamese, korean etc.
Technically India is asian as well, but people think
of people in india as... indians.
I consider Russia - Russian.

Little Europe, more Asia. |

Geographically speaking, both. Russia is a massive country, from Alaska to Finland. Historically and politically speaking, has to be considered european, since the country was born west of the Urals (the eastern geographical boundary of Europe), was influenced by european culture, politics, trends,etc.. and has also played an important role in the historical development of Europe. Not to mention that the overwhelming majority of people live west of the Urals. Who lives in Siberia?? |

The real question you are asking is, does Russian possess the mentality, culture, lifestyle and identity of an Asian or European nation. Russia, since its inception, has struggled to find where it was located. It is easy to point to a map and see that Russia is spread out over Europe an Asia but it is a stupid response. Russians themselves struggle with what they want to be classified as. While, after the break-up of the Soviet Union, they tried to focus on being close with Europe and having that European lifestyle, in more recent years, they have created and forged closer relationships with Asian nations, especially China and India and Russia is seeing the possibilities of being more Asian.
It is a conundrum that may never be solved but it is still one of the most essential questions Russia and Russians grapple with, where do they see themselves. I, as stated above, feel that Russia, while trying to maintain its relationship with the West, has moved to attach itself with the economics of Asia, has increased cooperation with Asian nations and has focused and invested in its future to Asia. |
