What is a true democracy anymore. With all the spin and all the rhetoric. All the impromptu speeches with the teleprompter. All the the spontaneous debates with the questions turned in and approved before hand. All the million of dollars, Euros and shekels generated for a candidate marketing and "product" placement. All the special interest groups and obfuscation.
Turkey at least honors its polling, and doesn't have to go to the Supreme Court to settle it's elections. A democracy is not any form of normative or Analytical Jurisprudence. It is a natural law, one person one vote.
How many times have you voted for the lesser of two evils.
What do you consider a true Democracy. and lets not even begin with the electoral college.
What about the moving of the straw vote and election deadlines. Oh yes I forgot to mention gerrymandering.
Let the the USA pass a Bill without pork-barrel allocations.
Good, Bad or indifferent a democracy gets what it deserves.
and besides what military coup? |

This time, people DID NOT fear a military coup. The people and the military were on the same page during the protests and demonstrations of millions on republicanism and secularism (cumhuriyet mitingleri).
This time people WANTED the military support behind their backs, when they marched with the slogans "Turkey is democratic and is going to stay that way""Turkey is secular and noone can change it"...
Unfortunately, this is beyond belief for other nations and a possible military coup fears them more then us, so their press misinformed their viewers on this unique friendship of people and military during the latest protests, when people sought after military, as protectors of the current regime, if became threatened by Islamic idealism. Abroad, military has been viewed a force for many countries, just like it has been in Turkey before. But in the latest protest, military became an icon of populist agenda, and people showed a desire to co-opt with military and they saw military as an icon of freedom and secularity. It is difficult for other nations to realize and understand this. Because historically military is a force rather than a consensus seeking unit in their experience and historical imaginary. In the Turkish historical and popular imaginary, military is populist, since it has a grassroots formation in the early revolution era. Although earlier 3 military coups disabled Turkish democracy, people did not associate the events of yesterday and the actions of military before with the events of today and the actions of military now. Interestingly, a unique silent agreement is there between the people and the military today. If the secular regime is threatened, people are going to call for their populist army. |

Would a true democracy have politicians? Would a true democracy have a military? It all depends on the will of the people. That's a true democracy. If all the people decide to officially fear a military coup, then yes, a true democracy can fear a military coup. That's what freedom is about, to do whatever you want, even if what you want is to be scared.
Do you understand now? |

Turkey--Democracy =oxymoron |

NO
we can not continue trying to speak up and have our voices slashed by the turkish military that devours 50% of our revenue, and creates fear in the public every month to make people feel like they need a military.
there is no democracy if the army can just crush peoples votes. no general was ever elected in place. they have no right to deprive people of there right to select their leaders. |

Is it a true democracy that fears Nazis and bans their actions?
Why, can't people use their rights to be Nazis democratically?
Edit: It seems people don't understand my meaning. I mean, all democratic systems need protection and the "danger" is relative to the country/community. |

I have thought about responding to your question because your Q&A are concealed from other users. Is there something you are afraid of that you conceal them?
As to your question, I would like you to give an example of a 'true democracy' (if there is one) anywhere.
Although Turkey's democracy suffered a couple of military interventions in the past, it is fast improving. Trust me, there will be no more military interventions, despite the fact that some Turks and some foreigners would like to see one. Turks do not fear another military coup. It is just not possible anymore. |
