YES. A part of it is in Europe, the continent of Europe and not the European mindset.
To simplify it for rocket scientists out there who don't understand simple geography. Example: You are standing at the border between California & Arizona, if you guys don't know that, it's in the USA - United States of America, and you can assume it is Turkey/Asia Minor & Turkey/Europe..
Legend: 0- one foot ; 00 two feet together ; II Border.
Ok, If you put two feet on one side say California where would you be?
II 00 -> California right?
and the opposite applies to standing with both feet on the opposite side of Arizona,
Arizona <- 00 II.
Now, You are straddling (both feet planted on each side of the border) between the borders of Arizona and California.
Arizona <- 0 II 0 -> California
Where you you be? Both in California and Arizona. Can you say I am in California or Arizona only? That dear audience is called being In two places at the same time.
Edit: Ok El Tee, Nevada then, I haven't been to the border, only LA. ^_^
Should I explain further about Europe and Asia? I mean the continents.
Sabato: Wrong illustration, poor cow anf it is sits not seats. If the sidewalk is in the border where its FEET are planted, not the tail, it is where it is supposed to be. And you are right Agnee said Thrace is in Europe, Thrace is a part of Turkey, therefore Turkey is also in Europe. |

3% of Turkish territory called Thrace is in Europe, the rest called Asia Minor is in Asia.
European and Asian parts of Turkey are separated by Dardanelle and Bosforus straits and The Marmara Sea.
The former capital city of Turkey - Istanbul lies on two continents - smaller part (including the historical Constantinople) in Europe and most of the residential areas in Asia. |

The border between Europe and Asia is the Bosphorus, so the western part of Turkey, joined to Greece, is in Europe and the eastern part adjoining Syria etc is in Asia. Istanbul is in Europe, Ankhara is in Asia. |

NOT COMPLETELY... Turkey is mostly in ASIA and only a small part is in Europe |

I was taught at school that Europe ended at the Bosporus. This is where Istanbul is. However, a few have commented in the press that Islam begins where Christian Europe ends - wrong!
Islam starts after the Adriatic and only Orthodox Greece is still between there and Turkey. |

In which sense?
- Geographically - a small part is on the continent of Europe. For the most part, however, it is in Asia (Asia Minor to be precise);
- Historically - well this criteria is controversial, because then most of us can say we belong to the Roman Empire. Or, let's say that all present countries, which belonged to the Roman Empire are European. So, no, in this sense it is no more European than Egypt is.
- Culturally - if religion is formative for the culture and values of a society - it is not in Europe, because its culture is based on Islam.
It is partly European because of its (still) secular character and the close geographical and cultural connections with Europe.
PS. Joannah: the example with California and Arizona is mind blowing, but in this case you will still consider yourself an American, right? Now this is hard one - what if you were straddling the USA (you know United States) and Mexican border? What would that make you - American or Mexican? |

No, It is not, Turkey can't be a part of Europe, First of all Turkey is the most democratic country and you have freedom in Turkey, you go Turkey and shout on the street "Erdogan is a gay" noone cares, they think you are crazy, but they never put you in jail as they do in the most modern countries. Turkey can't be a part of Europe because Turkish people are honest, they never have two faces as Europe does. You find the best hospitality in Turkey, not as do your own in Europe, the cultures are totally different. In Turkey you need to respect other religions, it is not like in Europe, you find racism in Europe, such as Christian Democrats (what the heck is Christian Democrats we have seen it , they don't want anyone live in Germany except Germans, such a legal holacoust) Turkey doesn't have such things.
Of course Turkey is not part of Europe because Turkey is a muslim country, Europeans doesn't have any tolerance to other religions as they refuse any country to join to EU if the country has a different religion such as Turkey. Well Turkey is beautiful country with Mediterranean coast-Aegean coast-Architecture-history and with its friendly people. The idea to join the EU for Turkey is a disaster because if Turkey joins to EU or be considered as a part of EU than Turkey will loose its attraction as being a jewel country between Asia and Middle East. As far as I know %70 of Turks are against to join the EU.
The question is how many Europeans live in the USA? 167 million.
I am perfectly fine with 4 million Turks live in Europe. |

Qu'est ce que tu pense?

Geographically, Turkey is Europe only in the Istanbul area. The rest of Turkey is part of Asia.
Politically, we are not part of the European Union though, but like many other countries, we are applying to enter into the EU. |

geographically: it is part of Europe
politically: it is European, since Turkey is a secular democratic state; but is not a member of EU, yet a member of European Council.
historically: it has good relations with Europe, in trade, in pacts and organizations, in world events, etc...
Turkish teams go for European cups, Turkish models are well known in Europe, Turkish brands (mavi, zeki, arcelik, etc...) are well used in Europe, Turkish news holds weight in European news, Turkish politics interests Europe, Turkish people travel often in EU countries, and EU citizens travel in Turkey, Turkish food is consumed in Europe, Turkish designers are worn in Europe, Turkish business is important for Europe, Turkish ports of entry are vital for Europe, etc... |

Irmak! Best Answer hands down. If I could give you ten of my points I would.
Psst! Joannah, the border between California and Arizona is a river, isn't it? I mean, the point is still there, I just don't want anybody to try to straddle it, drown and their family would come and sue you. I totally agree that geography is not really the point, though.
I mean, we as humans, arbitrarily decide those borders anyway, so what happens if Turkey gets in the EU. It just means the atlases change and Rand McNally gets everybody to buy new ones. Good for business, right? |
