The majority of Turkey is in Asia with a small part in the continent of Europe. The Galatasary or yellow bridge adjoins the european and asian sides of the country. However the Turks themselves are very pro western and do not follow arab traditions for example it is illegal to wear a veil or for a woman to cover her face on television. |

turkey. but is actually closer to the middle east |

Both and neither - The majority of the country is in Asia, but Istanbul is on the European Landmass.
Politically, some would say they are European (like the brits), others would not (france, germany, austria etc) |

Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in Southwestern Asia and the Balkan region of Southeastern Europe. |

It has parts in Europe and Asia. The border between Europe and Asia runs through Turkey. I think of it more as a middle Eastern country though for the way they live. It's a muslim country isn't it. It still has the death penalty and that is why it isn't being allowed to join the EU. |

Middle East |

A little of both really. There's a large Muslim population there, and physically, it's more part of the Middle East. However, a lot of the culture and history relates more closely to Europe. It was once connected to Ancient Greece, and the Ottoman Empire was very involved with European affairs. They are even trying to get into the EU. |

This country actually connects the two continents, and one of the major religions is Islam. As it is not appart of the EU, I (personally) would say that it is not really European. I kind of hesitate to call it Middle Eastern, too. It's one of those is-it-or-is-it-not countries, like India. I've never known if that was supposed to be considered part of Asia or what? |

Middle east in my opinion |

Istanbul is partly in Europe and partly in Asia |

I would say that Istanbul is seen as Europe (or at least a 'gateway'), but Anatolia as the Middle East.
I was told this several times in Istanbul: that it is a wonderful city (which it is) but that it is European: to see the 'real' Turkey, you have to venture far further into Anatolia. |

idance!

Middle east. But it's also Europe.
Kind of like Egypt. Middle East but also seen as Africa. |

Part of Turkey is in Europe - part is in Asia - I know because I had to prepare a book-length report on it for a college class. |

Turkey has land in both continents. And our west part people are like Europeans but Anatolia is more near to Middle East.
As a Turkish who lives in Istanbul, Turkey isn't a Middle Eastern but it isn't European too. We have our own culture. People can accept Turkey in Europe or in Middle East geographical but I think we aren't like Europeans or Middle Easterns. |

First of all, Middle East is not a continent. Turkey is an Asian country with a muslim population from central Asia... and they better go back to central Asia. |

turkey is still trying to enter in the map of europe.so half is in europe and rest is in middle-east. |

Bit of both.
Strictly middle East
But has US air bases so seen as Europe.
Has outdated attitudes towards human rights so ok with US
Not so good for Europeans but has sun and cheap housing opportunities. |
|

It is a european country although not a part of the EU. |

Depends on how you mean. Physically looking at it. Turkey is more like Iraq. Just a little greener and cleaner. Not so bomb washed out! Geographically it is a part of Europe and Asia. It is a Eurasian Country. |

it's part of asia and maybe even the middle east, but it's not in europe. |
|

Jay
 |
It is a part of the Middle East but it is also seen as Europe due to the fact that the Middle East is (predominantly) contained within Europe and is not its own continent. |

asia. middle east. |

Fifa sees it as Europe - it competes in the Champions' league and UEFA.
Eurovision sees it has Europe - it has both won and hosted the Eurovision song contest.
The BBC sees it as Europe (check here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/country_profiles/1022222.stm).
The EU sees it as Europe (almost) - it is in discussions about joining.
How does Turkey see itself? - Aligned to Europe through politics, trade and military connections but free to have other alliances. Some of which may be with the Middle East, but others with the Baltic States and the Turkic republics of the ex-Soviet Union which are based on historic, cultural links. |

People in Europe regard it as mostly European, although there's some controversy about whether they should be able to apply for EU membership. Geographically, it's both but I would say more European than Middle Eastern, personally. |

Türkiye is an European/Asian/Middle Eastern country.
If you mean Middle East in a negative way, also there are lots of cities or districts in Europe which seen as middle eastern.
Do not forget the back streets of Paris, London and even New York!!! |

It's geographically in Asia/Middle East , politically in Europe. It's a European Union candidate country and it attends European sports tournaments etc etc. |
