Turkey is a secular country which means religious matters and state matters are separated.
However the majority of the population consists of Muslims so it is not surprising to see the effects of it in daily life.
The difference with the other Muslim countries is ..well.. we are secular and they are not.. |

The Babe is Armed!

As Ipek said, and Cetin demonstrated, there is real separation of church and state in the government of Turkey. The degree to which Turks practice their faith varies greatly throughout the population. It is not an Islamic state such as Iran. Legislation is not based on Qu'ranic tradition or the shuriya' or anything like that.
Culturally, there is a tremendous Muslim influence, but politically, Turkey is secular, as they say.
Turkey has 70 million Muslims and is a Republic. Indonesia has 200 million Muslims and is a Republic also. This is my comparison of Turkey's Muslim nature to another country. :D |

Turkey is a secular country. Turkey (unlike some other countries) has no official religions and in Turkey there are many religions and beliefs which are respected.
None of these religions can interfere with the governmental business.
Since Turkey is not a muslim country we can not make that comparison you asked. Because it is totally different. |

Islamic Muslim countries put the Qu'ran before politics. the country would be run mainly by clerics and there politicians merely puppets.
Turkey being a secular country puts politics before religion, like most countries do.
if the UK was governed by the church and the bible was its manifesto then that would be similar to the extreme countries like Iran etc.
But of course most countries stopped doing that hundreds of years ago including Turkey.
The majority of the population is Muslim but they are not forced to be. its up to them how much they wish to practice there faith. the same as any other modern country.
Personally I would say the the Irish Catholics practice religion more than the Turks adhere to the Qu'ran. |

Officially(in terms of govt.) its a secular country...but in my experience, most Turkish people are religious to some extent and there are a good percentage of people who are truly pious. |

Muslim country: A country that majority are Muslims
Islamic country: a country where rules of Islam work
Secular: Religion in mosque / church, but nothing have to do with politics.
Secularism are about the laws, religion is about the people.
In secular countries (weather Muslim or Christian) religion does not deal with politics.
Turkey is still a secular country. I am not Turkish but I think secularism has contributed Turkey a lot. |
