Until the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, Kyiv was the capital of the Eastern Slavs--the Rus'. From then until 1919 the region of Ukraine was under the control of the Russian Tsars in the east and the Polish Kings in the West. From 1919-1922 Ukraine was independent. The Soviet Union controlled Ukraine until 1992 when Ukraine became independent again.

Ukraine is not part of Russia, it is a separate country in Eastern Europe. Ukraine was one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union, but since Soviet Union Collapse in 1991 it became independent.

no, it was never a part of Russia in the first place, it was only a part of USSR until it fell apart.

Mr. Speaker
thank god, after hundreds of years under the russian occupation, ukraine is free. well, sort of - i mean, it now has the freedom to screw up on its own which it's been doing quite successfully.

ukrainian language is close to russian just as it is close to polish - both poles and russians would probably understand maximum 40% if they had to listed to somebody speaking normal ukrainian.

NO, Ukraine is NOT part of Russia. It is an independent country.
Ukraine,Belarus etc. (15republics) were part of the USSR that fell down on the 19th of August 1991.

Actually, the question should be reversed.

Russia was once ruled through the Ukrainian capitol Kyiv. Pretense, bluster and guns have served this former backwater province of Ukraine well.

No. The Ukraine, Russia, and other republics were part of the Soviet Union(r.i.p.), however, Russia(in my opinion) feels as if it owns other territories nearby, by way of intimidation, invasion, and probably possession. I(if I can have permission) condemn the recent attack to the republic of Georgia, taking as an excuse that the same(Russia) had interests there. That's a negatory("NO").

Mendeleyev
Okay. No. It's next door.

No no Ukraine is now a separate country and has its own language and culture. It was indeed a Soviet republic. It was part of the Russian Empire as well...but no, now a whole different country!

Not really.

Squeaky P
It is basically the same kind of place, just no "Moscow" equivilent in Ukraine.

Cossak
Yes,its a part of South Federal Region of Russia...

*Summer*
Yes! Well, at least it used to be!
Ukraine used to be part of the Soviet Union with Russia, but now it is part of europe.

I remember from that game, Risk. But I didn't realize it wasn't part of Russia unril recently.
But it is still known as being related to Russia, because thei location, culture, etc. is so similar.

That was a fun game...

Hope I helped! ~Summer
