Is amsterdam a good place to visit in terms of shopping?& wat is famous there except tulips & red light area?

They have some really good varities of cheese. Of course the marijuana is outstanding. Not much in the way of fashion, but the city's unique enviroment is a must see for everyone.

amsterdam has incredible museums, restaurants, markets and shops. best thing to do is grab a copy of rick steeves' guidebook to help you out. eat some indonesian food, go to some weekend markets, hit the van gogh museum, walk along the canals, take a canal tour, hit the heineken museum, go to the anne frank house. there is SOO much to see. (tulip fields are out of town and only in bloom for a short time, but worth the trip) the red light area is interesting but only for a quick visit.

Amsterdam is a great place to visit. The people are friendly and most speak English fluently. The shops are good, some things are a a bit pricey but the quality is excellent. You will have a great time, go and enjoy.

Where am I?

There is a great shopping opportunity. For a lot of people the Nieuw markt and Kalverstraat are good, Rokin has more the tourist shops. There are very good restaurants every where for any taste. Everything in walking distance from the central station.
Then there are the many museums. Rijksmuseum for eg. Rembrandt, van Gogh museum, only a couple of yards down the street. Tram 5 will take you there.
They have also nice markets with great deals, like the Albert Kuyp market for example, tram 25 takes you there and the Heineken brewery, which has daily tours, same tram 25 takes you there.
Across the central station you find canal tours by boat, they have daily tours, but also canlde light dinners, so you can see all the bridges lighted at night, very pretty.
Also across the central station there will be tourist info (VVV), which can give you many more options and good rates on hotels if needed.

the dam rocks its hard to explain it to anyone but there is loads of shops museums a zoo and bikes everywhere oh and drugs mmm

after all these answers i can only add this:
there are many markets through out the city, for example there is a nice market with clothe and fabrics every Monday morning at westerkerk (Church)..
and every month there is a huge flee market in Amsterdam noord... 500 booth's :-) you can look it up in : www.ij-hallen.nl.
there are more then 6 parks you can go to and the botanical gardens (Hortus) are a nice way to spend a day (or half).

Diamonds, there are a great range of bookshops with a wide range of affordable titles in English (Waterstones springs to mind in particular). Delft china, Licorice are also well worth buying in Amsterdam. Don't forget there is a lot to see other than the coffeeshops and the red light district.

evry1 is entitled to their own opinion and i have to say i went to amsterdam last may and was awful experience. very gloomy. loads of museum same weather as UK grey horrible str with graffitti. the only decent thing abt it is the airport! loads of construction going on in dam square.it's a crap place!if ur a party animal then yes mayb but for scenery awful!
