It's in Europe. It's part of the country of Bosnia & Herzegovina. The capital is Sarajevo. It is one of the former republics of Yugoslavia

Gosh, are you serious? You must be an American, as you have no clue about geography. Bosnia is East of Italy, across The Adriatic Sea... in Europe.

Aurora
Bosnia is in Europe. It was a part of ex Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The capital of Bosnia is Sarajevo. Barry, please, don't get me wrong but I know a lot of UN peacekeeping mission members who spend a couple of years in Bosnia but didn't manage to learn more about this country, out of CNN and BBC prejudices they already have before they cam there. First, you put "Balkans" under the quotation marks. You probably don't know that Balkans is an official geographic term referring to mountains, not some metaphor for war, conflicts etc. Bosnia does have a rich cultural heritage from Ottoman Empire. A big part of Bosnian citizens accepted Islam in 14th century. There was a strong influence of Islam in architecture and style, as well as in customs of habitants. Bas Carsija, the old town of Sarajevo, destroyed in recent conflict was one of the European jewels. One of the richest Islamic libraries was in Sarajevo (unfortunately, destroyed in recent wars too). But there are also rich and strong Christian, Jewish and Roman cultural influences as well. Politically, Bosnia was far from Turkey. As a part of Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, Bosnia had a politics of self-governing socialism with all its pros and contras. People had the equal opportunities for education, work and vote, independently on their nationalities, religions or gender. Bosnia was a multicultural country with industry and universities. But what it is now, is not only thanks to negative nationalistic streams but also due to stereotyped, ignorant perception of Western decision makers and peacekeepers. Please, again, don't get me wrong. I am sorry that you didn't have the opportunity to meet Bosnia as I did and that you couldn't learn more about the country you have spent a year of your life.

aeiou, Balkan is peninsula named by Balkan mountain range. Please, learn more about your own region before you accuse hipnotique... for her intentions. You better answer her question. It is not strange that the world doesn't know much about you when you refuse to learn more about yourselves.

Boznia-Herzogovina formerly part of of Yugoslavia. East - North East of the Adriatic Sea - which in turn is part of the Mediteranean Sea - all part of Europe. The divide between Europe and Asia runs down the Bosphoros - the narrow waterway from the Mediteranean into the Black Sea.

In Europe, dear.

Eve
Bosnia is part of the area called Western Balkans, on the Balkan peninsula in Europe (Eastern part, surrounded by the Mediterranean sea and the Black sea).
And yes, the Balkan peninsula is named after the Balkan mountain range that crosses approximately half of the peninsula's central part.
Bosnia used to be part of former Yugoslavia.

Aurora, Balkans refer to the peninsula, not mountains... :P

Other than that, this child has been given homework and she is on her way to write a research paper about genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes or such bullied topics, while she hardly has any idea where the Balkans are located.

Probably would have been easier to input "Balkans" in Web Search...

Aurora, my mistake about from where the name comes :) For the record, I do not agree with your statement: "But what it is now, is not only thanks to negative nationalistic streams but also due to stereotyped, ignorant perception of Western decision makers and peacekeepers." I say their perceptions were rather of political background than them not having known what they were doing. They are certainly responsible for the bloodshed they created ground for, when they stood biasly from day one, as much as they are standing under same constellation today with the Kosovo situation. Ignorant perception you could have from South African politician, for example, concerning Bosnia, but not from Germany, America, France... Their decisions which warped Yugoslavia into an escalating civil war, were either intentional and calculated or committed under political pressure (coming from USA and Germany at that time).

I haven't accused anyone.

Hypnotiq, what were your motives when you asked this question? :P

Bosnia is in the "Balkans", which are geographically located in Europe.

However, the Balkans (including Bosnia) were conquered by the Turks in the 14th Century. Bosnia may be culturally and politically more like Turkey (which is in Asia) than Europe.

Europe and thanks for 2 more points.
