Is budapest the greatest city in europe?

or has it been ruined yet by cheap stag do's from the UK?
Additional Details
What about the most under-rated city? I love Reims as well......

I love Budapest, and i don't think it's been ruined by the idiotic, immature and selfish Brits just yet. Most Brits couldn't find Budapest (or even Hungary) on a map. Prague is ruined thanks to the stag do's and alcohol fuelled weekends, as is Riga and the rest of the Baltic states.
Budapest is still my favourite city.

I went last week, still amazing. I think the culture is so strong down there that the good stuff will prevail, specially the good wine and the paprika

no london is

no

like budapest ever was the greatest =)
look at london, the perfect mix of old and modern. not many cities could put things like the london eye and big ben so close and make it work. Paris tried it with the louvre and ruined it with that huge pyramid. budapest may be a great city, but never could compare to the likes of london, moscow, berlin, madrid, rome, turin etc. (especially london hehe=P)

Depends of course what you call the "greatest".

If you take to number of people living there:

Paris, France - 9,638,000
Istanbul, Turkey - 9,413,000
Moscow, Russian Fed. - 9,299,000
London, United Kingdom - 7,640,000
St. Petersburg, Russian Fed. - 5,132,000
Milan, Italy - 4,251,000
Madrid, Spain - 4,072,000
Frankfurt, Germany - 3,700,000
Katowice, Poland - 3,488,000
Berlin, Germany - 3,337,000
Dusseldorf, Germany - 3,251,000
Ankara, Turkey - 3,190,000
Athene, Greece - 3,103,000
Koln, Germany - 3.067,000
...
Budapest: 1,695,000

If you mean the city with the most economical and financial influence, surely at least London and Moscow are much more important. In the area around Hungary I think Prague is more important.

Political: London, Paris, Moscow, Brussels,...

If you mean historical: it is important, but that's the same for Saint Petersburg, Berlin,...

On art and culture: Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Saint-Petersburg, London,...

Touristic: London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Brussels, Amsterdam, Bruge, Prague, Milan, Venice, Wien,...

So I think you can't say in any way that Budapest is the "greatest" of Europe...

I have been 3 times and love the city and surrounding area It is a city in two halves Buda the old part on the hill and Pest the new modern side of the river with some lovely shops,

Constant_Traveler
I actually really liked it but I was there in 97 so there wasn't a lot of tourism yet. Friendly people and it was soo cheap back then we could hardly believe it. I remember the zoo was only 50 cents. I hope it hasn't been ruined, my and my husband were thinking of going and going to the baths there.

I would have called it the most underrated before but I also think Strassbourg France is gorgous and pretty underrated.

From what I've heard from visitors to that city recently, Budapest is becoming a very techno advanced city. Very up and coming as well as trying to maintain all it's history.'

brit-the-brit
Budapest??? in comparison to where exactly?? you cannot compare Hungary to places like Italy, France or UK....but yes I agree too many drunk English lads are ending up bringing wealth to thier economy.

truefrog2002
