Here's the scoop Nancy. Corsica has been a part of France since WWII ended. Prior to that it was part of Italy. Most of the people their are of Italian descent and speak Italian as there first language. They have tried to reunite with Italy, but France doesn't want to lost the tourism dollars. After WWII, alot of Europe was disoriented with borders changes, etc. Its a beautiful island and the weather is very temperate. ;) |

Corsica was Italian (Genovese) until 1768, when it was purchased by France. It is currently under French control.
Napoleon was born in Corsica, and he had to prove that his lineage was French in order to be accepted into French society. |

Corsica belongs to France, and it is located near Italy. It is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus). It is located west of Italy, southeast of France, and north of the island of Sardinia.
Corsica is one of the 26 régions of France, although strictly speaking Corsica is called a "territorial collective" (collectivité territoriale) by law. As a territorial collective, it enjoys powers slightly more important than other French régions, but for the most part its status is quite similar to the status of the other régions. Corsica is referred to as a "région" in common speech, and is almost always listed among the other régions of France. Although the island is separated from the continental mainland by the Ligurian Sea, politically Corsica is considered part of Metropolitan France.
Corsica is famed as the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte.
Its position has been considered significant as a platform for military operations, which were violent and ongoing between Italy and France for centuries. The possible unification with Sardinia has however always been seen as a dangerous eventuality, especially by the UK, because it would have granted to their ruler an overwhelming power over the Mediterranean Sea.
The city state of Genoa held sway for centuries before giving Corsica to France in 1768 to help pay off a debt. |
