Is gay marriage legal in Greece?

Show all answers

asimenia
NO - this is a very religious country and seeing as the Bible frowns upon such behaviour and Greece is controlled partly by the church it's doubtful that it will be legal anytime soon.

Zoi - I have been here for 20 yrs - Maybe not officially run but they still have major 'influence' on most aspects of Greece. You cannot deny that - see yesterday's newspaper for their land grabbing techniques! kathimerini

Zoi - I just answered the question - Nothing more! I do not deserve this type of abuse from another user - totally uncalled for!
There are no racial slurs or comments in my answer - on the otherhand you should look at yours.

I added the links and further comments to your last comments pointed at me - which were also uncalled for - I see you have deleted your last 'nasty and untrue' comments and added new ones.

If you wish to abuse me further I suggest you do it direct rather than using this site/section for your own chat(back)

Actually cpinatsi - I do not - and you did not read the last comments either - the only answer to begin with was

NO - this is a very religious country and seeing as the Bible frowns upon such behaviour and Greece is controlled partly by the church it's doubtful that it will be legal anytime soon.

NOTHING more - the church does have a great influence on Greece - that much is true. I answer was normal and not any attack on Greece or Greeks - you read answers in any way you wish - in any tone you wish - not necessarily the tone they were written in.

I am tired of defending myself - I read loads of comments throughout Yahoo and I never step off mark (apart from when I get angry about 'there's no racism in Greece - as I feel I'm more qualified to answer this)! Just because my opinion may differ from yours does not make it wrong! I follow a different path in life - I am foreign in Greece with a Greek family ... life has not been easy but I am proud of what I have accomplished - I do not see life through rose tinted glasses - I have no protection (only myself) I see and say things as I see them - if a person has a different experience/opinion then say it - not pass judgement on mine - as I do not do that to yours!

If you think I make negative comments (which I don't) then read this written by a Greek further articles can be found in old issues of kathimerini and other newspapers ....

More reading (written in 2004 but worth a read)

There isn't any specific ceremony or law for a homosexual marriage in Greece.
It has nothing to do with the church but only with the Greek parliament and the politicians.
There are now a lot of voices and it seems that there is some chance to happen within few years.

Frankly, I doubt it. There was a huge kerfuffle two years ago, with large-scale street protests and official complaints from the Greek government, because the movie "Alexander" truthfully showed that Alexander the Great had a male lover.

No gay marriage is not legal yet.
There are some talks and suggestions from politicians to legislate a form of marriage for homosexuals.
This year will probably clear things up.

No as in many other "western" countries. As Asimenia said Greeks are generally conservative and religion plays a major part in being "Greek". the church haw also an influense in public and political life (as in many other westetrn countries Poland-Spain-Italy etc).

When you compain about things in your country is doew not mean you dont love it. You just think of a way of things to get better

I am in favor of the possibility of gay marriage, but it hasn't happened in Greece. It has nothing to do with the church, because unlike what asimenia says, Greece is not controlled by the church. On the contrary, the church is using public feeling to gain influence. Politicians too. But the fact that the majority is against it, doesn't mean that everyone in Greece has the same opinion. By the way asimenia, I don't see any abuse in what zoi-eirini wrote to you. She only points out that you accuse Greece at every instance. Since this is indeed what you do, you shouldn't feel insulted by it. Those of us who love this country don't overlook the problems, but things are definitely not as bad as you describe! You make it sound like this is a theocratic Taliban regime, well it is not!

Zoi ((Ζωή))
No, gay marriage isn't legal in Greece. Greece is a conservative country, but not more conservative than Spain or Portugal. I totally disagree with Asimenia, greek state has nothing to do with church nowadays (maybe 40 years ago)!
But you can imagine a country like Greece, where the men are famous lovers and the women shave their legs and are usually sexy (like all the Mediterranean women) to attract men... Homosexuality is stil a taboo.

Asimenia, it is really sad that you don't have but blaming words for the country you are living in for such a long time. I suppose it is a nightmare to live in a place, that you don't like. It would be good to think yourself : what would be the reaction of english people that participate in yahoo if I was getting into their english section and talked about how rasist english people are to Arabs and how USA controls the UK decisions? And of course, english are more developed and modern than greek people...
