Is it Istanbul a dangerous city? |
I'm under 18 and I've never been in Turkey before. However I will go on holiday with my friends there soon and I really wanna know if it's a dangerous city. The only foreign place I've been on holiday (without my parents) is Prague, Cz. Rep. where i spent over 1 month in the summer and I totally loved it. Is it Prague very different from Istanbul? Is it Istanbul a dangerous city? People who live/have been there please tell me what is it like, Thank You |

I have been to both Prague and Istanbul. I loved both cities and they are both probably my top two favorite cities. As for Istanbul being dangerous, I actually felt more nervous in Prague traveling alone at night. They are two totally different cities, Istanbul feels much more alive and vibrant, while Prague is beautiful but not as exciting. You will have a good time, be smart, and you wont get in trouble. |

Not at all ! It is just another huge metropolitan. As others said, you should exercise the normal precautions that you would in other big cities. You should be careful about the pickpockets in crowded areas and at public transport.
I think the most dangerous thing in Istanbul for foreigners is the traffic. Doesn't matter what the traffic lights say, be careful when you cross the street!
Compared with Prague, I think Istanbul is safer. The pickpockets of Prague are real artists.. |

Been there and it looked like any other big city of Europe. Just use your common sense, is the best weapon to combat the danger!
The vast majority of the people were very friendly and polite. |

As dangerous as New York, London, Paris or any other major cities. ;)
I've never been in Prague so I can't make a comparison. But do not forget, Prague and Istanbul are legacies of VERY different cultures. ;)
Have a nice trip and I hope you and your friends enjoy this city.
Regards.

Dear Asker,
Enjoy your time in Istanbul. If you liked Prague you would be crazy about Istanbul.
Prague is beautiful. Really beautiful. And that is all.
Istanbul rocks. Istanbul is amazing. You can feel the city's pulsation in your veins. You will see.... :)
Dangerous? Not more than other big cities. BTW can you name any safety place in the world nowadays?
what the hell????
"if you get to a religious place don't speak another language
(especially if ur a girl)" - Are you sure you have been to Istanbul??? I guess you have NOT.
"some people might try to steal your money" - Yes, like everywhere in the world.
"or they might make prices higher for you" - Have you been forced to buy something? Do you know the word "bargain"? |

If u are looking some trouble I'm sure u can find some one who can kick your tonsils
( can u Imagine it?!? If u can't ; still no problem dude , u can call me without a hesitation when arrive at Istanbul .. I'll show u with a object lesson )
.. but If u wanna spend good time with your friends, N.P .. u got the right address.
Be polite to others who around and fun too much , or u can prefer be mess with our people .. and they can beat u well .. your option, your choice.
a friendly advice .. use your brain, doesn't hurts. Trust me.

Generally, no,
but the dark, narrow backyards of the streets in any metropolitan city may be dangerous. And in every big city, there are some areas where the crime rates are higher.
In general the people are friendly, but,
Buy a ' lonely planet' information book, and you'll be told what to avoid.
In general Istanbul il is a fantastic city with a chaotic traffic.
Hope you enjoy your holiday. |

not as dangerous as New York |

I am watching you

sometimes
if you get to a religious place don't speak another language ( especially if ur a girl)
some people might try to steal your money
or they might make prices higher for you
people who say its a safe place are liers
try not wearing short stuff
nowhere is safe... |

Yes, Istanbul has proven to be dangerous for many young men who make easy victims of bar scams all over the city. Consider diverting to Berlin. |
