Is it safe for Americans to travel to Russia?

My friend is Russian--well, now he's American---and he says that it's not safe to go there. What do you guys think?
Additional Details
har har, I was referring to the developments of neo-Nazi movements in Russia...and also the lingering communism left in their government

it is safe and it is beautiful there - you should definitely go and see it for yourself - do not listen to what horror stories people are telling you and do not pay attention to the prejudices people have about Russia from the old cold war times

If you were referring to nationalism, why not specify your race in the question? It's fairly safe if you're white, and not that safe if you're not. Still, it's unlikely for one to be directly assaulted.

Depends on the region though, it's a rather diverse country. Regions like Dagestan or Chechnya would be unsafe regardless of your race.

i'm from russia.
it's absolutly safe.
as long as you are not looking for adventures. lol

Yes, I have been twice and had no problems. The main thing is to have someone with you to help get around the cities and to translate for you.
I would not recommend going without a guide or part of a group. While English is spoken by a lot of young people in Moscow and Saint Petersburg the majority do not speak English so it would be difficult to get around with out help.

fireman sam
depends which part of russia, most parts you are ok, there are a few i wouldnt strole in and say that you're american

Misanthropist
Sure, as long as you don't do anything stupid or illegal. Americans get in trouble because they :
a) don't take the time to learn some basic Russian phrases AND don't attempt to find a translator. Don't expect everyone to speak English. This is Russia after all.
b) have that distinctive "naive" look on their face that makes them an easy target for crooks. I know that the American smile is embedded since childhood, but Russians tend to have a more neutral expression most of the time.
As long as you're white you won't have any problems with the nationalists. And even if you're a minority, they tend to leave the tourists alone.
Communism has been dead for 16 years. Time to get over it, people. The only thing that's left of it are corrupt beaurocrats. How would communism affect tourists anyway?
All in all, it's as dangerous as it is anywhere else in the world. Just use your head and you'll be fine.

?
is it safe anywhere? im sure its ok.....they need the tourism...

Maria
NOOOOOOOOO
its so bad i escaped from russia. and im russian.
