I am a 21 year old female who has been living in Moscow for a month and I have felt completely safe the entire time. I would recommend having someone reliable pick you up from the airport and show you around a bit. And be careful just like you would in any other big city. Good luck and have fun! |

You will be fine in those cities. A little basic Russian language, will make your travels a lot easier. |

Well I live here in Russia.. I can tell you Yes. it is safe IF you don't plan on going to rural areas by yourself. Many people come to russia.. Its FAR to busy to be harmed.. I can pretty much promise that.. matter of fact many girls around 10 to 18 travel in moscow alone.. But you have to look at it this way... It is NO different than New York City.. You face the same dangers there like you would here. Which if you plan on traveling to tourist areas your going to be fine! There is plenty of ENGLISH speaking people here who could help you if you need it too.. |

Sure, just arrange for a pickup at the airport or you'll get ripped off. I studied in St Pete and have been to and from Moscow numerous times. I've travelled through Russia, and even alone on the Trans-Siberian through Siberia. I did this all between the ages of 22-26 and never had any problems. Some basic Russian would help, but don't worry about the language thing too much, you'll be safe. |

And if I ask "Is it safe for me, white, to walk nights through the black ghettos in LA or NY"? What will you answer me? Should I think then, that all USA citizens are ksenophobic?
If you stay in centre of the Moscow or St. Petersburg you will never have any problem. If you go to the overpopulated outskirts , so called "sleep districts" you will always find some young punks who want to robe you, or some tajiks who want to sell you drugs. |

It's OK if you arrange to be picked up at the airport and stay in a good hotel. The airports and hostels are notorious spots for con-men to pick up on unsuspecting foreigners (you don't want to run the gauntlet of taxi drivers at Sheremetyevo). As far as being on the street downtown, you are as safe as any other city, but just be cautious of strangers.
Personally, I always hired a reliable driver to pick me up and take me bar-hopping at night in Moscow. He knew where to go and assured I got home and it was cheaper than renting a car. |

For the most part it is safe, just avoid areas where there are immigrants. Think LA. You wouldn't walk through a black neighborhood being white would you? Same applies here, but for now, on a much lesser scale. |

I would say it is never a good idea to travel on your own to foreign places |

yes, just if you are in cinema and walking past people who are sat down make sure you walk facing them or guys might touch your ***, thats a thing they do in Russia. Dont stay out too late at night either, although the streets are safe its still best not to take chances |

No, I would not do this. Try and find a travel buddy because they are both worth a visit. |

Well, I would say good luck, it's always better to travel with someone especially to a place like Russia. Not to say this is a bad idea, just be cautious. Remember, no one like Americans that much, especially outside US. Use your common sense and you will be fine. |
