Yes, it's totally safe and you probably won't be alone for long. I went alone, and within a couple of days I had met a group of people and we traveled to one city together, then I met another group of people and went with them to another city etc. You just have to take a couple precautions. The first is how you carry your money, cards, and documents. Pickpockets are rampant and they know backpackers carry large amounts of cash, cards and identification on them, so you will be targeted. Get a money belt, use traveler's checks, usually if you get a guide to backpacking at the bookstore, they offer more helpful tips. The second most important piece of advice, stick to hotels and youth hostels (which are cheaper and you can meet people to travel with there). Don't crash at someone's friends place in order to save money, you can end up in a really dangerous situation. Just take precautions with your money and valuables and IDs(don't even leave them in the hostel room when you go to the bathroom, take them EVERYWHERE) and just trust your instincts. I would say at least half the people I met backpacking had started out alone, but they found people and groups to travel with soon enough. Others really enjoyed just being independent and having the time to themselves. Have fun and enjoy the independence.

NO. Don't do it girl. If you don't speak the language, if you don't know the customs, if you don't know where you will be sleeping, if you don't know where to turn to for help then simply DON'T.
Join a group and enjoy Europe. It is beautiful.

its not safe to backpack anywere alone

It depends how old you are. I would be wary of backpacking anywhere alone, quite honestly. If you were just going to travel normally it would be different but going somewhere foreign, with something as unplanned/hectic as backpacking can be, alone is perhaps not the best idea.

Women have a good instinct when it comes to what to avoid and run away from. Western Europe is less dangerous than a woman backpacking alone across the U.S. Just do your homework, research where all the hostels and places to stay are, and where the train stations are and enjoy your independence! This could be a journey of great inner and outer discovery! I knew another Jewish girl who did just what you want to, and she made out just fine.

It really depends in what area are you going to stay and your age is very important too. I think in our time there is no safety place anywhere, so If you really will decide to go, please BE CAREFUL!!!

And of course enjoy your trip,

I think it's pretty safe for a girl alone. Just don't go with strangers and just don't be very naive. Trust your insticts and use your brains. Have a lot of fun and maybe you meet someone in Europe to spend the rest of your trip with. Have fun!
