Is it safe to travel around Europe by myself? Any countries I should be more careful in?

there are places you want to be extra careful in, or just avoid it all together. The boundary between Northern and Southern Ireland, I guess what you could consider the downtowns of anywhere, and don't go into ANY allies anywhere. No matter what. And keep your money in a front pocket, and maybe even keep it somewhere where you know no one would look.

i just got back from europe, and although i went with a group there were times when the feeling of "safe" was not allways so close. I went to france and italy and found both of them beautiful. Any big city you go to you will have to be careful. Saftey is allways the most important thing, but also remember to have fun along the way as well.

In general Europe is safe to travel in. As a woman, I found traveling alone required more attention to safety. Dress conservatively, walk and act with confidence - but not arrogance!- watch your belongings carefully when walking, keep cameras and phones in a purse or fanny pack rather than a separate case, try not to look like a tourist - work to blend in, learn a smattering of the language of the country you are traveling in before, avoid seedy areas. And last but certainly not least... use common sense! Enjoy your trip.

armenia
europe is safe, but you need to avoid certain districts of certain cities, especially at night... use common sense and your gut feeling..

i wouldnt recommend it. many countrys are becoming dangerous even for their citizens to live in.if your american its even more so because of negative thoughts about your foreign policys. how long would it take? by the time anyone noticed you where missing its way too late. if you was my gf id forbid it. i use to worry about my japanese gf going to the town shopping centre on her own though lol

Be careful if in Italy, especially Napoli (Naples) and Venice. Other than that its pretty safe.

jack
oohh - dodgy. I take it you are female, in which case, couldn't you take a travelling companion? It doesn't matter hat country you visit, there are good & bad people/places to go in every one. If you do go alone, please be very careful & stay alert. Wear a 'bum-bag' to keep your cash in and take a personal alarm & a CS type spray to protect yourself angainst any would be assailants. Enjoy your travells, but stay safe....read the following website below....

It depends on how you are traveling. I would not try car, but coach and plane. Austria where I live at present is very safe. there are very good hostels in main cities of Europe which we have found very good. some are on Skype so you can talk live to the hostels and book in such as budapesthostel which also has a pick up service from the train. Budapest is a great city just like Vienna where I live. we tour most of Europe in our old van in summer and sleep in the camp sites which are first class in Austria. Germany is not as good or safe in the North and East. Belgium we have found safe. Italy I would not even with 2 people, high theft, and on your own could be risky in some areas, But saying that my wife has toured the world twice on her own and never a problem. as life you can be lucky or shot outside your own door. If you want to see the Europe see Vienna the safest city in the world, then move on as you feel free

Ingmar
Just for the record, Austria is not an East Germany City, and it definitely safe to travel here. No, there are no Nazis on the lose waiting for a chance to attack you in Austria.

Vienna is one of the safest cities in the world. Just beware of pickpockets, like everywhere in the world.

stanleyhallwood
As far as I am concerned it is not safe to travel anywhere alone in this day and age (This Country included). If you are thinking of travelling around Europe go with a partner or better still in a party.

Constant_Traveler
I have traveled a lot on my own and it can be a lot of fun. Europe is relatively safe. I don't know who the idiot is who said that you will get attacked by neonazi's in Germany. I lived there and it is a pretty safe place. If possible try and stay with the hostels. You will meat people that you can travel with that way. The places I would not go alone are Italy and Turkey. If you want to go badly then go with a group. Mostly pay attention. don't take money out in public. Make eye contact with people on the street. Never leave your drink unattended. Always look around and take note of your surroundings. I have traveled a lot by myself with little problem but I pay attention to everything that is happening around me. Don't trust anyone.

In general you should be fine. Its just the obvious places you should avoid (as mentioned previously). Keep valuables close, dont flash cash around and try to blend in as much as possible. I've never personally had any problems in europe, including many a slightly inebriated stagger round various cities ;-)

If you are Black do not go to Germany's Bayern province and [Ex]Eastern Germany cities like Leipzig, Dresden, Leipzig and Austria.
Nazis and Neo Nazis are still there and may assault you at the sight.
England, France, Swiss,Holland, Belgium ,Italy, Sweden, Norway, less risk. If you are White and have enough money no problem at all.

dexxxana83
paris & amsterdam... my friend says that people get jacked during broad daylight

sault
"No-one", male or perhaps more-so female, is safe anywhere travelling alone. Even in couples and in groups, a violent end could be just around the corner. Every country has it's nutcases, and you only have to meet them the once to kiss it all bye byes, and then of course there's the chance of terrorism (which also can happen...mostly in inner cities).
Your answer then is No it is not "safe" to travel around Europe by yourself and No there are No Countries where you should be "more careful in".....you should exercise extreme caution everywhere you go. Good Luck......Take Care..bye
