Is it true that Greeks are unfriendly to American tourists?

No, we are unfriendly to Bush, but we are a hospitable people and I guarantee that all American tourists I see here are having a good time and everyone is very nice with them. Of course, this excludes taxi drivers, who are nice to tourists but find ways to get more money from them by taking the longest route etc (lol). Plus Greece is probably the safest place to be in the world right now, if you don't consider car accidents.
PS. We do have anti-American posts and protests and all that, but these are addressed to American wars and policies, not the people.

As to valley storm, I have to admit that you are right up to a point, because what you say is true regarding greeks who are in the tourism business (restaurant owners, etc) in very touristic areas (Rhodes), and in particular areas with not so good tourism (I mean where tourists go for clubbing, drinking, etc, and not cultural tourism). I have seen this phenomenon and i agree. But all the rest of the greeks, as a population, are very friendly, helpful and hospitable, where there is no money involved, so it is wrong to generalise and say we like the money from toursists. Actually the people who do get money from tourists are the ones who are rude to them

druboy
Not at all!
We Greeks love all tourist's, except for the Germans who ruined our land and raped our grandmothers.
All of you Americans can come over and enjoy our hospitality and eat some of our food and bask in the heat of our warm dry sunshine.

Yasso mi Fila! (hello my friends)

I answer after 16 other answers.
Nobody answered "I was in Greece, i am American
and people were unfriendly".
Can you undrestand why?

.

wickedmind
I wouldn't say so. I'm a brit and have been out to greece several times and find them a very welcoming race. Only met one yank out there and he seemed happy! And us Brits are friendly to the yanks!

Kicky
As a Greek I can ensure you that we are friendly to all people visiting our country. It's part of our culture and way of living.
What we are against is the way Americans handle international politics.

Why are u asking tht?You already know the answer. As for the point tht we like money.Yes we like it!As for taxi-drivers who steal foreigners guess wht. They are stealing us every day too.So I don't think they are doing tht on purpose because your being foreigners but because the most of them are crooks.Don't let some cheaters frighten you.I think tht everyone likes a good person wherever it comes from....

I want to add tht there is a contradiction here.On the one hand we deslike Americans on the other we are trying to imitate them.So choose.Hatred is not the best thing,so it's not sth to be promoted by questions such as "Do Greeks hate Americans?"

Kenneth G
I have been to Greece Once and they were very friendly to me. I know alot of people would be unfriendly to the native of a country and the native would be unfriendly right back.

ranger_girl
That is SO untrue! Greeks are so friendly to EVERYONE whereever they might come from.
My husband is American and whenever we visit my parents in Greece he never wants to leave because of the way he is treated by greek people.
He had such a wonderful experience that we will be moving to Greece for good next year.

I know I know not
could be...if they are as stupid as you...

Spartan
The greek people have nothing against the american people. Most people in greeks and especially the men are into politics and they don't like the american policy in the Balkans and the Middle East.

Some older greeks have negative feelings for the USA because, the USA was helping the Greek Junta in the late 60's and the early 70's (like USA did in south America - Kissinger's policy).

They don't express those negative feelings to tourists though.

In WWII Greeks fought against the Italians and the Germans and some fought against the English too.

Most of our tourists come from Germany, England and Italy.
We dont have a lot of tourists coming from the US, only Greek-Americans.
Some Americans visited Athens during the Olympics. Greek fans always supported the opponent of an American player (because of the wars in Serbia and Iraq) and the Americans took it the wrong way.
I think that Americans are welcome all over Europe but the media in US are terrorizing you

BTW the Greek junta was supported by the Nixon (i"m not a crook) administration and by the then vice president Spyros Agnew (greek guy)

Nobody cares if you are an american or a german or a french or anything else (at least here in Greece). Just be a nice boy and everything will be allright. Also we are friendly to all. I think YOU are unfriendly to us and to the rest of the world.

Hell no...

My Mom was born and raised in Finland. She came to this country married to my Dad at 21.

I grew up knowing other countries hate the Americans. They tolerate us (something Americans rarely do!) because of our money spent in their country.

Think about it! Americans come into their country and act like it's the USA. Where's our fast food? Where's our convenience?

We don't bother to learn their language. They should know English!

Isn't that what you don't like about "foreigners?

I've never been to Greece but have heard that on several occasions and saw Greeks making anti-American posts on numerous occasions(considering the number of posts I see from Greeks)

I have Americans friends and whenever they have come to visit me, they are always worried about not being welcomed in my country (Spain, by the way); of course they do know they are welcomed in my house, family and friends, but they they feel insecure of going out alone because they say people will know they are Americans and may be unfriendly to them just for being Americans!!. I don´t know why so many American people worry about not being welcomed abroad or feeling insecure outside their own country. If I think someone is going to be unfriendly to me is because I have done something bad to that someone, don´t you think so? What have you, American people, done to the whole world so as to feel secure only inside your own country? Won´t it be another "tale" your rulers are telling you and you just believe it?

Is Greece one of those countries that USA didn't bomb?

If so, it might be that they just dislike loud-mouth American tourists (they will change their tune if those tourists stay away).

Come to South Africa, here we do not dislike the $ or you.
We might make fun of you though.
Also if the criminals around here take an interest in you it does not mean that they dislike you.

valley_storm
Most countries are unfriendly to American tourists.

Do you know of a country whom is friendly to Americans at the moment??

If you want to feel comfortable in Greece, study up hard the Greek language before you go, THIS will make them alot nicer to you I promise :)

Ah yes.. and take lots of money, they like that too :D

I want to know who here is trying to say Greeks don't love money LOL! And Greeks in Greece are fairly rude to any tourist unless they are looking for tourism money!
