Is it true that most Greek people will tell you that they're Greek within the first 15 of you meeting them?

I_got_the_wow_effect
i bet they would but i dont get it what they got to be so proud of?

Leonarda
Excuse me, if you speak with a swedish for example in the first 15 minutes, he will not say to you i am swedish?everyone will tell you where he is from...I really dont know what you mean, and where is the problem my dear...But I agree with Kimon...it is a warning to show that we are crazy, and the others have to be afraid of us...hahahaha.......

the_lipsiot
Hi Minkus - I'm Greek............(that was a lot less than 15 minutes right?).

Yes - it is partially a warning that you are talking to a crazy Greek person, but also because we are very proud of our nationality.

........and to the person who wonders what we have to be proud about - I can only wonder if they have had their head in the sand or up their backsides - how does 3000 years of history and the foundation of European Civilisation grab you?

..Tolia..
why you are surprised??

do you hide your nationality?

we are proud or our origin!

but you are mistaken

15 min is tooo long

haha!

I have friends that are Greek and they are not like that....I think that's a generalism because the Greek culture if very proud of their heritage and stongly believe in raising their children with Greek customs and appreciation of their culture and heritage.

Kimon
Yes why not? We usually do it sooner. It is actually a warning...

edoardo_visconti
I'm half italian and half greek....Both countries DO have a very important history and cultural tradition....And being proud of both, other people just get to understand and conceive my roots...me not saying anything...where on earth are you coming from? And what is your point?

Not necessarily. However, most people of Greek heritage that I happened to meet have come from my vast set of experiences in the diner industry, which is, by definition, going to expose me to a lot of Greek people. So, in the sense that a disproportionate number of diners are owned or operated by Greek Americans, the answer to your question, in my experience set, is yes.

emiliosailez
If you were born either in Greece or of Greek parents you too would do the same thing.
No need to elaborate, but in the western world virtually everything you can think about started in Greece.

mavmar72
probably yes depending on the topic discussed... we are proud of being greek

ranger_girl
Usually asking where someone is from and getting a response is an "ice-breaker" so I am assuming if the person you have in front of you is greek he/she will respond that he/she is. What is the problem?

Probably...

They don't have to - As soon as they say "I own, and/or my father owns, and/or my brother owns, and/or my uncle owns, a diner"- I know they are Greek.

Within three minutes I'd say. But you can always tell - they can't pronounce H, but say Chilton and Choney instead of Hilton and Honey...
