Is it true that you shouldn't wear white socks while in Europe, because they will think you're rich and mug u?

The only reason I am asking is because my husband told me if we ever travel overseas like we want to, I can't wear my standard white socks, jeans, sneaks, and nice shirt. I don't really wear much white anyway, just my white socks. I can understand it being a fashion fax pas, but do people truly mug u because u own white socks? Any help would be helpful, and Thanks!

Sorry about the misspelling, it was a late night for me. I posted this question on here more or less to prove my husband wrong. He has traveled, but his good friend who has visited Europe told him that. He now sees the error of his ways, you can't believe everything people tell you. Thanks for all the nicely put answers!

Probably not. They know you're American. And they'll know you're NOT rich, because American money isn't worth anything these days!

I wear colored socks as a rule. I think I had some white ones with me in Spain, and it was my husband who got pickpocketed.

No one mugs in Europe. too risky. They pick your pockets, so, if you are always aware of who is around you, and don't look like you're daydreaming too much, you should be safer from them...keep credit card numbers someplace else, just in case you need to make reports, and the phone numbers as well, and warn your cards that you'll be out of the country, and using them in ______________.

t_maia2000
The reason you can't wear your standard white socks, jeans, sneaks and nice shirt is that a child could spot you from three miles away as an American with that outfit in Europe.

Ever heard the saying "When in Rome ..."? It does not end with "do as the US American tourists do", that's for sure!

You make yourself and your hubby prime targets for pickpockets.

Hahaha, that's a good one, don't wear white socks because you'll get mugged. It's nonsense. You might just have the fashion police on your case, but they can be swatted away like the annoying little insects they are.

Natty-Lea
No that isn't true at all. Wear whatever you like. :-)

jen t.
I've traveled and have had many friends travel to Europe and I have never heard that in my life, so I don't think it's true.

There are more important things to worry about than if your white socks are going to cause a fashion faux pas (or a mugging!). I lived there for four years and I wear white cotton socks because they don't let my feet sweat as much as those other materials do. I never got mugged. People are going to know you're an American, or a foreigner anyway, no matter what you wear and no matter where you are.

White socks are a fashion faux pas, not fax pas for starters and as such people will not mug you, they will avoid you. Americans have bad taste anyhow, and a bad reputation over here, please don't add to it. Wear normal clothes and buy some while you're here. For your husband you should buy a book on World Today - he doesn't sound like he's been around much.

grrrr-lol-grrrr "Jeans, sneaks and nice shirt" are perfect because we were that too (Europeans). Where I am from white socks are just considered bad taste. And in Germany there seems to be a band who called an album "white socks can shock"..
I had no idea that Americans like to wear white socks :D

No it's not true at all. People wear all kinds of clothes in Europe and also there are so many tourists that you won't stick out.
But maybe you can ask your husband about the basis of his claims and share with us? I'd like to know why he thinks that really:)
