Totally Blunt
The Republic of Northern Cyprus isnot occupied by Turkey.

Like Kosovo, Southern Osetia and Abhazia, the people of the Republic of Northern Cyprus has the right to self-determination. And, well, they have determined to be free from being the minority of Southern Cyprus.

Why is this so hard to accept?

anlarm
Kyrenia (Girne in Turkish, Kerinia in Greek), is a town in the Turkish Republic of Norther Cyprus.
Northern Cyprus is NOT under occupation. The Turkish army came in July 1974 in accordance with article 4 of the Guarantee Agreement (1960) which gives the right to any three of the guarantor states (UK, Greece, Turkey) to intervene in case the Rep. Of Cyprus is in danger. At that time a coup backed by the Greek Junta, attempted to overthrow the gov. of Cyprus (which was run solely by Greek Cypriots since Dec.63-they threw out Turkish Cypriots). Turkey warned them not to try to destroy the republic and not to harm Turkish Cypriots. UK declined from intervening. Thus the Turkish army landed, was greeted by fire and had to take over 35% of the island for the security of Turkish Cypriots and its soldiers. They will leave once a peaceful solution is found to the conflict.
Such an opportunity arose a few years ago with the famous Annan Plan. Greek Cypriots said no to the plan, which would have had the Turkish army out by now.
Yesterday, leaders of two communities have started peace talks. I hope they arrive at a mutually acceptable solution, so that all troops (Greek, Turkish and British) leave our island.

Net
Kyrenia is occupied by Turkey and only the Turks deny that (from the whole world).

The people of Cyprus have the right to self-determination. Like Southern Osetia and Abhazia. The people of Cyprus chose to unite with Greece in 1955-1959.

Why is this so hard to accept?

The people of Cyprus have the right to self-determination. Like Southern Osetia and Abhazia. Because of the the plans of the British and the Turks, the people of Cyprus got only independence, not union.

Why for Turks is this so hard to accept the independence of Cyprus? Instead of accepting the will of the people of Cyprus, they invaded, killed, did all kind of crimes and now they still occupy half Cyprus. They did all that, using as an excuse the Turkish minority which (by the way) was cooperating with the British colonists against freedom (and also) is guilty for the violence, hate and terrorist attacks against Greek Cypriots (see T.M.T.).

Think again when you are using examples such South Ossetia and Abkhazia because those regions have minorities too and those minorities are bigger than the Turk minority of Cyprus. I doubt that those minorities there did as many crimes against Cyprus as the Turk minority here.

And of course that minority is only an excuse. We know the real reasons of Turkish hostility against Cyprus which is the Turkish obsession that: "is a matter of national security for Turkey that Cyprus will never be a part of Greece and have a new front on the south". Sounds crazy? sounds like Turkish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abkhazia#Demographics

Edit: In 1963 president Makarios, changed 13 points from the constitution. The Turks left the parliament and the goverment alone. We didn't throw them out. The rest is history for the rest of the world and modified propaganda for the Turks.

Edit: What kind of military agreement does Cyprus has with the US? As for France, it's our country and we can chose to cooperate with whoever we like.

aman stop lying.

No, Cyprus is not a part of Turkey.

Kyrenia or Girne (both are acceptable) is a part of Cyprus. Turkey is a neighbouring country. TRNC is like an authority in the northern part of Cyprus and Kyrenia / Girne lies under its authority; but TRNC it is not an internationally recognised state, so you cannot call it a state. The only state is the Republic of Cyprus. When Cyprus reunifies, the TRNC may be a constituent state within the future Federal Republic of Cyprus but that depends on what kind of solution is agreed.

Firat O
YES we call it Girne.

hi from Girne to greeks :)

Çetin
hi,
Girne is in K.K.T.C and K.K.T.C isn't part of Türkiye because K.K.T.C is the independent country.

Certainly not. The very name of the city is Greek. Kyrenia has been occupied illegally by Turkish troops since 1974.
Kyrenia belongs to Cyprus, NOT to Turkey.

It is the area of Cyprus that has been occupied by the Turks since the mid 1970's. However, whether it could be classed as part of Turkey is debatable.

cpinatsi
Kyrenia is a city in the north part of Cyprus, which is occupied by Turkish troops, but definitely not adhered to Turkey itself.
As for anlarm, my dear friend, although this is not the official Greek position, and although the whole coup thing was organised by CIA in order to create this situation, I agree with you that when the Turkish forces invaded Cyprus they had indeed a very good excuse (you say reason, we say pretext, but I will use the word excuse which is neutral) = the dictatorship. Well, after less than 1 year the dictatorship fell. There is a legal democratic government. So why didn't the Turkish army leave in 34 years? Why does it act like a conquering force that demands benefits from a victorious war, instead of going back to the pre-coup situation? If the reason of teh invasion was the coup, well, after the coup stopped it would be normal to say Ok, we go back to how things were before. Instead, Turkey demands more than a peaceful solution, it demands that the status be recognised of a separate power in Cyprus, not a unified people. And being a real Cypriot that I know you are, you know the reason for this: the new-comer Turks from Turkey, not real Turkish Cypriots, who have now taken over Greek homes and changed the idiosyncarcy of Turkish Cypriot community.

Totally Blunt, that is an honest answer and that is what I am saying above, so I do not understand why the thumbs down! I wish your politicians would accept that this is what they want and stop saying they are protecting the island from a coup that ended 34 years ago or tha they want a unifying solution!
