It is regulated and monitored by the government.

It is spelled Amsterdam by the way.

You haven't lived until you have strolled through Amsterdam's red light district in the early evening after a stop at the local coffee shop.

I must add that it is one of the most wonderful cities in the world. We have a great deal to learn from the Dutch.

Prostitution in the Netherlands is legal and common. A majority of the women working in prostitution are foreigners, and the country is fighting against human trafficking.

Prostitution is legal everywhere in Holland, the clubs are visited monthly by the vreemdelingle politie to make sure any foreigners are workign legally and most good clubs have their girls checked for stds weekly and hiv monthly

I was at a friends house one day and we saw a man in a yellow raincoat and he was taking a long time deciding which one to use, (there was a row of four on this street) after a while he got out a clip board and it became obvious he was counting the customers (for tax estimate)

Simply put, yes. Amsterdam is mostly know for the red light district (The well known windows along the canels).

Is this a state monitored thing, yes. Prostitutes are tested and are taxed. The whole concept of Prositution is not simply a female thing, the profession employs males as well. The red light district pretty much can cater to whatever ale's you at the moment.

Now, just like in the states (except it's all legal here) the higher end of prostitution is done in brothels and private clubs. If you check a phone book you will find private houses listed. Women who work for the private clubs feel that the "red light district" is the low end of prostitution.

Clean issues. Well, not that I have first hand knowledge on the inside of a room in the red light district; I know that when I was there a prostitute turned away a street man because he was too dirty. (This was the translation from my Dutch friend).

Income wise, when I was there the Dutch guilder was the acceptable currency and I think their prices ranged anywhere from 50-800 guilder (Dollar) for services rendered.

Ironically, there was some sort of clean up effort taking place in the red light district; so who knows what will become of those well known windows.

its legal to a degree. there are many rules a prostitute has to abide by. first of all, solliciting on the streets is not legal, only inside brothels, or behind the well known windows.

secondly anyone registered as a prostitute, has to be checked for several venirial diseases regularly. there is also a an extensive set of rules what a prostitute cant and cant do.

Yes, it is. And this means that the workers have to undergo regular health checks also. Of course, just because it's legal doesn't mean that all of it is legal and above board, there are people forced to be prostitudes in the Netherlands by crime gangs.

It's legal in other countries too, like Austria for example.
