It depends where you want to go; the cities are nice, particularly Barcelona, Seville, Salamanca and Granada and are worth a visit but not in the summer! Another spot if you're into surfing is a small town called Tarifa, located 40 minutes from the Gibraltar border and roughly 3 hours from Malaga airport.
Another spot that is particularly beautiful and unlike anywhere else in Spain is Galicia in the North which has beautiful snow capped mountains and endless rivers.
I live on the Costa del Sol; it's fake, boring and goes with the classic 'Sun, Sex and Sangria', if you want to see the real Spain I would avoid coming here or Benidorm (near Alicante which I believe is even worse than the Costa del Sol) and instead go to the places recommended above.
Best time to visit the cities is September through to May before it becomes unbearable in the Spanish heat although the weather can be a bit unpredictable.
