Not anymore. Card. Karol Wojtyła, who later became pope John Paul II was Polish. He died on 2 April 2005 and Card. Joseph Ratzinger was chosen on 19 April and took name Benedict XVI. He is from Germany, Regensburg if I'm not mistaken. Apart from that I'd like to point out that every pope (aside from those chosen when Vatican had no actual teritory after Itay united and before Lateran Treaty was signed) has citizenship of Vatican and is a head of state recognised also by non catholic and non-christian governments. |
