Officially sales of weed are not legal in Amsterdam or the Netherlands. It falls under the policy of 'gedoogbeleid' where it is tolerated under given conditions
- no more than five grams per person may be sold in any one transaction;
- no hard drugs may be sold;
- drugs may not be advertised;
- the coffee shop must not cause any nuisance;
- no drugs may be sold to persons under the age of 18, nor may minors be admitted on the premises.

So in small quantities you will not be prosecuted if as above. However, if your are caught for another misdemeanor and found in possession, then can be prosecuted for this also.

Hard drugs are absolutely not tolerated and are acted upon stringently. By tolerating marijuana, resources can be targeted to hard drugs.

So I think that covers the "everything is legal in Amsterdam" myth!

what ignorance...its NOT legal..its tolerated and only restricted in coffeeshops for smoking and less than 5 grams for home use only..you cant stroll down the street toking a joint..that is illegal.

I don't think it is, my teacher went there for a family vacation (of all the wonderful places to take her 90 year old mother huh? lol) and was surprised to find that it's not 100% legal, but no one cares about that. I guess she said the police will just stroll on by and not hassle you, but if you're causing a real scene they will ticket you.

No, weed is not legal in The Netherlands. (Where Amsterdam is merely a city).

This is actually the same as asking if it is legal to murder people in the US.

Weed is illegal - but they have a non-enforcement policy IF you adhere to certain guidelines (see answer above).

But, fail to follow these rules, or cause trouble while under the influence, and you will find out how 'legal' it is.
Carry to much on you, and you will be arrested for being a dealer.

For some reason, especially in the US, they seem to think that they know it all about The Netherlands, while i guess 90% of those that should "yes it is legal" haven`t even been to The Netherlands.
But, if you chose not to believe those that REALLY know - the consequences are your own

In Amsterdam, coffeeshop means a place where cannabis is openly sold and smoked, while only cafÃ© means a coffee and tea drinking place. The coffeeshops can legally store up to 500 g of marijuana and can sell up to 5 grams to adults over 18.

Eleven US States have decrimalized posession(some up to 100g). This means on a first offense there is no criminal charge but a civil violation in which a fine is paid.
