Italy or France - to live & why?

They're both great. I think it would be very hard to choose, myself.

frenchy
reading other answers, people make me laugh, as they think about the food and the beauty of the country.
Now, when you move in a country, you have to think job, accommodation, mixing with the local...
I'm French and as you can guess, lived in France for many years (till I move in UK 12 years ago)
French is a beautiful country indeed, but the job situation is very hard. Unless you have a special skill, you'll find it very hard to find job over there, even if you speak fluent French.
The tax system is not very good either, neither in the rate, nor in the paperwork (27% NI and tax is not paid with the wages, so you end up with a big bill at the end of the years, after fighting with the ton of paperwork). People complain about council tax here, but between "tax fonciere" (the owner pays) and "tax d'habitation" (the resident pays), it's the same as here.
Accommodation is usually the same price as here, food cheaper, leisures more expensive, but the wages (net) are lower, so you get less for your money.
French people are not so welcoming, unless you're a tourist and spending your money there.
The figures speaks; There's more than a million French people living in UK, only 150 000 Britons living in France! Sure there's a reason.
Sorry, don't know enough about Italy, except as a tourist.
But here you have "real info" to make your mind.

France!!

The man with no name
I'd never live in France because I do not like the French. Saying that i've never met any Italians that would make me want to live in Italy either!

Italy...it's beautiful there and people are very friendly and respectful..france is more expensive too

Sally
I lived in France for a year when i had just turned 20 it is a beautiful country but would never live here again due to the hate some of the people had English had to pretend i was Scottish to a lot of them. So it would be Italy for the food there and the pure romance of the county, I'd have a house in Florence to be all romantic and look at art all day then another house in Tuscany to drink lots of wine and paint, crush grapes and speak the language of love.

I intend to live and work as a consultant in Europe in four years.
I think I will settle in Lyon or Dijon France. The location is more central to much of Europe than most Italian locations (Milan excluded).
Florence Italy would be my first choice - but nearly impossible for an American to get an ExPat assignement there.
