The Dutch not only speak English but do so with an American accent. Most educated people in the Netherlands are fluent English speakers and often speak German and French as well.

No one will expect you to speak Dutch although it doesn't hurt to be able to say "please" (Alstublieft) and "thank you" (Dank je)

I might also add that my personal opinion garnered from a half dozen visits to Amsterdam is that the Dutch are the friendliest people on earth so don't sweat it.

first of all, we speak dutch, not deutsch deutch is german for german. Secondly as a tourist, english will be fine. most dutch people, especially the younger generation speaks english well.

if youre in for a longer stay, to work, and maybe even to live. you will need to learn dutch to have any hopes of earning a good living.

Hi,

Sure.
Almost everyone in and around amsterdam speaks english to a degree.
German (Deutsch) is also widely found.

Dutch (Nederlands) is the official language.

But, don`t fret - just do stuff with english. We can manage that fine.

carla l
English is fine. Almost everybody speaks (or understands) it.
BTW we speak DUTCH not DEUTSCH that´s what they speak in Germany. Staying longer, living or working(?), would be best to learn Dutch.

Yeah its fine. i went there last summer. The official language there is Dutch so everyone speaks that, but English is understood by many. Especially like the hotel people, and people who work at airports and stores around the town speak english. and yall. Deutsch is not Dutch, Deutsch is German lol. anyways

yeah if you can speak English then you are absolutely fine! :D

I guess you mean Dutch (and not German, although the 2 languages have similarities, at least in their vocabularies, when you read them). No, it is not necessary, Dutch are so fluent in English and moreover they are really friendly, you will have no problem.
And yes, it is always nice to know a couple of words, like good morning and thank you.

just talk English, we all (I'm from Holland) learn it at school, it shouldn't be a problem if you're just polite (but that's normal)

have fun in Amsterdam!!!

People in Europe speak English. It is required in most EU countries to start learning it in Kindergarten and continue throughout high school and college.

African Farmer
English is widely understood.
German (spelled deutsch) and French are the "secondary" languages, but you'll get by just fine in English.
