I have wrote about this subject many times in this and other forums. The FYROM's call themselves Macedonians when they don't even know the meaning of Macedon....
Makednos or Makedon, meaning "tall" or "highlander", was the tribal name of the ancient Macedonians.[2] Synthesized by the Greek root μακ- ("mak-" meaning "long") that can be found in Greek words like μάκρος ("makros": long, large) and μήκος ("mekos": length).[3]

Μακεδνος--Μακας -δνος...for the second part I have been troubled with many people because it is more important...
Δνος from Δαναος.
Now they are going to tell us that they are Danaoi?

Calling Macedonia FYROM (Former Yugoslavian Province Of Macedonia) is not different than calling Greece FOPOG (Former Ottoman Province Of Greece).

People whose indentities were tried to be erased by a communist rgyme for a long time must be honored with what they rightfully deserve.

History knows the so- called "INTERPRETATIO GRAECA". That means Ancient Hellenes used to give their names to all the items.

In the excavations in Macedonia there are many names of people and gods DIFFERENT than ancient Greek ! And that is not something new in the history and archeology.

Edit: Have you ever heard about Daron (Дарон)?

You should write or post link with macedonian names (Александар, Филип,Каран,Птоломеј) and then you will get explanation from us!
If we call USA, "USASOS" does that mean it's greek:)?

This answer concerns me, because I am a Macedonian and I am a Greek!
Yes, I understand those etimologies, as everyone who understands Greek.
They are the names of the Macedonian Kings.
Though, if we want to be fair, we have to say that Ancient Macedonians were living in a place, where also Thracian tribes existed, they were in fact at the edge of the Greek world.
Just look at the grave signs and the epigraphies, you'll get the picture. Bear also in mind that it is extremely difficult for a folk to abandon its language and adopt a new one, if this language isn't impossed or 'dectated' by some special needs.
Example? Karamanites from Turkey (9 centuries under Turkish rule, they didn't complitely forgot their language! Roman Empire and the surviving of Greek language).
Ok, I don't see any problem in this. Do you?

This is a proof that our neighbors avoid to answer.

How can someone being NOT GREEK and uses always GREEK NAMES?

I mean, the Fakedonians say that Greek was the lingua franca back then,just like is English now.

Why me,and all the other poeple in Greece or everywhere, have THEIR OWN NAMES( I mean in their own language) and not ENglish names?
Why ancient Macedonians -if they weren't Greeks- they had ONLY Greek names?
They wrote ONLY Greek in their inscriptions,and they spread Hellenic culture?

The fact that Macedonians used only GREEK names,SPEAK GREEK ,used GREEK in everything and spread the GREEK culture, doesnt say anything?

Macedonians are Greek citizens as are Cretans , Athenians, Spartans etc.
You have to learn your lesson before asking such questions that have obviously answers.
Of course we -Greeks- know where these names came from!! we don't need to steal the history of any other country in this planet
because we have our history and we know it very well, we respect our ancestors, we are deeply proud of them and we understand why other neighbors might be envy of this precious inheritance that Modern Greece has.

well i would answer but i think Vasiliki and zoi covered the subject completely.
however i would LOVE to see the names of the "different gods" that Laoplanos mentioned. Since i'm a pagan, i'm familiar with many pantheons from all around the world, but i've never heard of those "different gods".
