Matthew Nimitz proposed that the Northern Greek region of Macedonia be renamed. What should it now be called?

The UN mediator for the Macedonian naming dispute has just proposed in recent talks that rather than Macedonia (the country) be renamed Macedonia region in Greece should be.
http://www.focus-fen.net/index.php?id=n126836

Since that none of the compromises involving the country of Macedonia' name were acceptable to Greece. Only Greece is the one with a problem with the name maybe it would be easier for them to change the regions' name to avoid confusion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia_naming_dispute#The_current_situation

Sounds a good idea to me. These are my suggestions:

1)NORTHERN GREECE - Region of Macedonia was known as that till 1988. So going back to the old name should be simple.

2)THESSALONIKI PROVINCE (Solunika) -Greeks like naming regions after cities.

No. 1 is fine!
Unless the Greeks would insist on a name that contains "Macedonia". In that case I believe, if you look at the geographical position, that best would be to name it "Inferior Macedonia" - as opposed to the Superior one, being right above it.

and yes, let us see who we are

Here is the article:

The current situation
The naming issue has not yet been resolved, but it has effectively reached a stalemate.[23] Various names had been proposed over the years, for instance "New Macedonia", "Upper Macedonia", "Slavo-Macedonia", "Nova Makedonija", "Macedonia (Skopje)" and so on. However, these had invariably fallen foul of the Greek insistence that no permanent formula incorporating the term "Macedonia" is acceptable.[24][3] Greece had counter-proposed the names "Vardar Republic" or "Republic of Skopje", but the Macedonian government and opposition parties had consistently rejected any solution that eliminates the term "Macedonia" from the country's name.[25] Following these developments, Greece has revised its position and demonstrates its acceptance of a "composite solution" (i.e. the incorporation of the term "Macedonia" in the name, but with the use of a disambiguating qualifier).[26][27][28][29][30][31]

For their part, the inhabitants of the Republic of Macedonia are overwhelmingly opposed to changing the country's name. A June 2007 opinion poll found that 77 per cent of the population were against a change in the country's constitutional name, and 72 per cent supported the Republic's accession to NATO only if it was admitted under its constitutional name. Only 8 per cent supported accession under the "FYROM" reference.[32]

An increasing number of states have switched to recognising the Republic of Macedonia by its constitutional name. A few had recognized it by this name from the start, while most others had switched from recognising it under its UN reference. By September 2007, 118 countries (61% of all UN member states) had recognised the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name.[33] Some observers have suggested that the gradual erosion of the Greek position means that "the question appears destined to die" in due course.[34]

The compromise reference is always used in relations when states not recognizing the constitutional name are parties. This is due to the fact that the UN refers to the country only as "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", although all UN member-states (and the UN itself) have agreed to accept any final agreement resulting from negotiations between the two countries.

Although the two countries continue to argue over the name, in practice they deal pragmatically with each other. Economic relations and cooperation have resumed to such an extent that Greece is now considered one of the Republic's most important foreign economic partners and investors.[35]

Most Greeks reject any use of the word "Macedonia" to describe the Republic of Macedonia, instead calling it ΠΓΔΜ (Πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβική Δημοκρατία της Μακεδονίας), the Greek version of FYROM, or Skopje and its inhabitants Skopians (Greek: Skopiani), after the country's capital. This metonymic name is not used by non-Greeks, and many inhabitants of the Republic regard it as insulting. However, Greek official sources sometimes use the term "Slavomacedonian" to refer to the Republic's inhabitants; the US State Department has used the term side by side with "Macedonian", albeit having them both in quotation marks.[36] The name "Macedonian Slavs" (Македонски Словени) is another term used to refer to the ethnic Macedonians by non-Greeks. A number of news agencies have used it (although the BBC recently discontinued its use on the grounds that people had alleged it was offensive), and it is used by the Encarta Encyclopedia. The name has been occasionally used in early ethnic Macedonian literary sources as in Krste Misirkov's work On Macedonian Matters (Za Makedonckite Raboti) in 1903.

The official logo of the process for European integration of the Republic of Macedonia. The March 2004 application of the Republic of Macedonia for membership of the European Union may help to speed efforts to find a solution; in a meeting of 14 September 2004, the EU noted that the difference over the name of the Republic of Macedonia still persists and encouraged parties to find a mutually acceptable solution, but stated that it is not part of the conditions for EU accession.

In 2005, Matthew Nimetz, UN Special Representative for the country, suggested using "Republika Makedonija-Skopje" [sic] for official purposes. Greece did not accept the proposal outright, but characterized it as "a basis for constructive negotiations". Prime Minister Vlado Buckovski rejected the proposal and counterproposed a "double formula" where the international community uses "Republic of Macedonia" and Greece uses "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia".[28][29]

Nimetz was reported to have made a new proposal in October 2005; that the name "Republika Makedonija" should be used by those countries that have recognized the country under that name and that Greece should use the formula "Republika Makedonija – Skopje", while the international institutions and organizations should use the name "Republika Makedonia" in Latin alphabet transcription. Although the government of the Republic of Macedonia accepted the proposal as a good basis for solving the dispute, Greece rejected the proposal as unacceptable.[37]

In December 2006, the government of the Republic announced the intent to rename Skopje Airport "Petrovec" to "Aleksandar Veliki" (Alexander the Great).[38] Mathew Nimetz was invited to Athens in January 2007, where he commented that the efforts to mediate in the issue over the name were "affected and not in a positive way".[39]

The Republic of Macedonia's aspirations to join the European Union and NATO under its constitutional name have caused controversy in recent years. Under the Interim Accord of September 1995, Greece agreed not to obstruct the Republic's applications for membership in international bodies as long as it did so under its provisional UN appellation. Leading Greek officials have repeatedly stated that Athens would veto the country's accession in the absence of a resolution to the dispute.[40][41][42] The Greek foreign minister, Dora Bakoyannis, has stated that "...the Hellenic Parliament, under any composition, will not ratify the accession of the neighbouring country to the EU and NATO if the name issue is not resolved beforehand."[41][43] However, the Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has denied ever committing himself unequivocally to exercising Greece's right of veto, stating instead that he would only block the neighbouring country's application for EU and NATO membership if it sought to be admitted as the "Republic of Macedonia".[44] On Friday 19th October 2007 Karamanlis stated that without a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue, FYROM can not join either NATO or the EU.[45] Negotiations between Athens and Skopje were resumed on the 1st of November 2007 and shall be continued on the 1st of Dec of the same year.

The northern region of Greece has to remain Macedonia, since that is the name of the land for thousands of years.

On the contrary, as it has been proven, except for a narrow strip in the south of the country, the FYROM's territory (Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia - UN provisional reference, UN Resolutions #817 of April 7 and #845 of June 18 of 1993) has never been part of ancient Macedonia.

Further this state never existed before 1944 when Tito created it as one of the constituent republics of communist Yugoslavia. To claim the name, ethnicity and culture of "Macedonia" by the FYROM which occupies less than 10% of the ancient Macedonian area is ludicrous and irritating to those that live in the other 90% of that area.
Furthermore, since this 10% is only 1/5 of its own land, calling the whole country "Macedonia" is ludicrous and irritating to many inhabitants of the other 4/5 of the FYROM which have no connection whatsoever to ancient Macedonia.
It is therefore most logical for the FYROM to change its name to what that area was called prior to 1944 ("Vardarska") such as “Vardarska Republica” or “Republic of Vardar” in English, or to “Republic of Central Balkans” since this very new state is an actual patchwork of different Balkan cultures.
More moderate options is a name that signifies the area that this state corresponds to: the north part of the Geographical Macedonia and not the actual, historical Macedonia; hence “North Macedonia” or “Upper Macedonia” or a name significant of the origin of the majority of the people in FYROM, hence "Slavomakedonija".

Or perhaps, for those who like to use the UN provisional reference, it can be altered as:
"FORMER YUGOSLAV REPLICA OF MACEDONIA", and for short, FYROM.

The article says completely different things.
Don't present it in a fake way.
It is clearly written :
" …envisages a compound name BOTH for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the Greek region, which has the same name. The information mentions that Nimitz wants the Greek Macedonia to be DEFINED. "
Completely different from what you say!!

As for "North Greece" it is amazing how such fake information circulates so easily from the Slav-Macedonians!!!
The term "North Greece" or "Northern Greece" IS STILL IN USE and it is used to define the geographic regions of Epirus + Macedonia(the authentic one) + Thrace!!!
Authentic Macedonia of Greece was never "renamed” and was always called Macedonia by the Greeks!!
Already from 1913 the liberated area was officially called "επαρχία Μακεδονίας" which means "Province of Macedonia" and remained as such till present.
The only difference is that the province of Macedonia was divided in 3 peripheries when entered the European Union.
The 3 peripheries of west, central and eastern Macedonia and they are called like that since 1913 not 1988.)
Next time try not to post fake information and especially the fake argument about "North Greece".
(check this map from national geographic from 1958 were the term Macedonia is clearly visible. No official name “north Greece” appears!
http://www.maps.com/map.aspx?pid=15988
Check also the map about the races of Europe
http://www.maps.com/map.aspx?nav=MS&cid=22,1529,1538&pid=15959 )
Try to find any real arguments
Read also what Denko Maleski, fmr.
Slav-macedonian Minister (for foreign affairs of FYROM), has written for the "Utrinski Vesnik" newspaper and you will understand how fake arguments appears from Slav-Macedonia:
“"The lack of capability by "macedonists" in condition of democracy, also contributes to the vision of their opponents. THE CREATION OF THE MACEDONIAN NATION, for almost a half of century, WAS DONE IN A CONDITION OF SINGLE-PARTY DICTATORSHIP. In those times, there was no difference between science and ideology, so, THE MACEDONIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY, UNOPPOSED BY ANYBODY, COMFORTABLY PERFORMED A SELECTION OF THE HISTORIC MATERIAL FROM WHICH THE MACEDONIAN IDENTITY WAS CREATED. There is nothing atypical here for the process of the creation of any modern nation, EXCEPT WHEN FALSIFICITATION FROM THE TYPE OF SUBSTITUTION OF THE WORD "BULGARIAN" WITH THE WORD "MACEDONIAN" WERE MADE. IN CASES WHERE THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE, THE PERSONS FROM HISTORY WERE PROCLAIMED FOR BULGARIAN AGENTS WHICH CROSSED INTO SOME IMAGINARY PURE MACEDONIAN SPACE".

Airpole
Just because an ignoramus mediator is in charge of negotiations it doesn't mean that whatever he proposes will be acceptable. Especially when those suggestions do not meet the general consensus. Macedonia was always there long before FYROM even existed. Indisputable fact of that is the Greek lettering on all archaeological findings. None with the Cyrillic one used centuries later , or any other form of alphabet .
So your suggestions of renaming our lands is absurd and you may reserve it for your own country.
If you want to be a good neighbor you should be willing to be respectfull of your neighbor's ground as you expect them to do for your land.
Trespassing is by no means allowed. Common law.

Here we go again...
Macedonia is historically Greek, not Slav!!!

Roberta
Yes, "Real Macedonia" will be good for Greece. Or "Authentic Macedonia". Or "Genuine Macedonia". Or "Actual Macedonia". You can call your country "FAKE MACEDONIA"!

cpinatsi
If you read the article properly, you would see that he proposed to DEFINE the Greek area ALSO. Not that it will be called something else and Fyrom will be called Macedonia!

asimenia
It's Greek - get over it and leave off the subject - you're only doing it to irritate the Greeks on this section ... go complain elsewhere!

Athena, I'm afraid yours is not a question, but a statement.
By the way, please think - the problem with the name is definitely not a problem for Greece.
The problematic name is FYROM, as it is accepted by the UN.
This dispute is most detrimental to the Republic of Macedonia, because it dooms it, a small country, to isolation. The only result is that it will still continue to gravitate around Serbia.
Anyway, you most probably have no problem with this.
The EU and NATO do not seem to be so important.

Listen dear, in your very amusing and simple question I have to give you a simple answer:The name is ours, belongs to our land and our grandfathers. It is not for sale and is not for anyone else to decide other than Greeks.
So you can tell Mr Nimitz to shove his proposal along with the other proposals that were given in the past.
Bottom line: NOBODY but the Greeks is in the position to decide of our name and/or our fate.
Molon labe!
