Money exchange?

we are going to Turkey for the first time this month and was wondering whether it was better to change English money here or there

It is always better to exchange money where you will go. do NOT use exchange stores or banks to exchange cash. Instead it is the cheapest to use your atm card. When you exchange at a place, you often pay higher than the real rate. It turns out to be 15% - 20% higher than what you should be paying. When you use an ATM card to obtain cash the fee is between 1% and 2%. With credit cards it is at the most 3%. (I think some cards like Capital one make it free)

Anyways I write a lot about traveling to europe on my blog. It is geared towards backpacking (I am not sure if you are backpacking or not) but it also has a lot of general helpful tips for travelers. You can check it out if you like

I go overseas every year and do my exchange when I arrive there. A few times I had a layover in the Amsterdam airport and they accepted usd but gave me euros back in change.
I notify by phone or email on each bank or visa website the dates I will be out of the country so they will allow overseas charges and not think my card is stolen since it is out of my usual service area of shopping. I give them the states airport I will be in and then the country where I will be visiting (Greece)
If your card won't work at one ATM just go to another ATM machine and try it...some may not take the card but you'll find plenty of them and one will.

Over there, because they may accept dollars/pounds over there, because I've been to countries before and they do accept dollars, according to the price in the country.

EXAMPLE: Mexico: 6 pesos = 1 dollar. Shirt costs 20 pesos. You give cashier $2 and something cents.

Just incase, exchange some money HERE first, so if the thing that I told you doesn't work over there, then you still have cash on you.

When I have traveled I never got money in advance. I just went to an ATM machine and withdrew what I needed. That is where you will get the best exchange rates. Try to charge most of your purchases.

change a bit say £50 to get you through the first day, then take your stirling with you or buy travellers cheques if you are worried about safety. (though you are likely to pay commission on these-they don't like them) you always get the best rate in turkey- not just from banks but restaurants, shops etc. they love stirling and will compete to change your money. you can even pay for alot of things in stirling. or... you can draw out from atm but your bank will probably charge you for this unless you are with nationwide. this does guarantee the best rate available for that day though (much better rate than at home). happy holidays!

Every time I've been to Turkey I've took sterling with me and got it changed as and when needed over there. You tend to get a better exchange rate. You can get money exchanged just about everywhere from shops to banks to restaurant's just keep and eye on the exchange rate at different places and if they charge commission. Last year I got £30 changed before I went just so I had some lira with me when I arrived (to pay the bar bill!). The only time we had a problem was in Side and that was in winter when there was very few visitors and most were German and everywhere was dealing in Euros.

exchange some right now so you have something when you go there

I always find that its better to use an English service to change money, If your in a tourist area on your holiday, they will charge you more for the conversion because they can! Your in a foreign country and there is no other choice so they get you!!! If you have to use a cash machine abroad, make it worth it as the charges are high. Take out a fairly large amount if you need only a small amount, just in case and of course keep it safely hidden from pickpockets and such! The post office is good for changing currencies I believe but shop around a bit.

Here...but it's better to get traveller's checks instead of cash.
