After Ottoman Empire declared war to France, Napoleon attacked Egypt and captured El-Aris and Gazza on February 1799. But not long after that,only on May 1799, an Ottoman army commanded by Cezzar (butcher) Ahmed Pasha, defeated French army. And send Napoleon back to France on August 1799. I think Napoleon was only an agent of the French academic community, hired to ensure the spread of the Metric System as the dominant measurement system in the world. French royalty had resisted this innovation and got their heads cut off for it. After seeing that, Napoleon knew he had to make a good show out of the whole conquest of the world thing, so he was trying really, really hard. In the end, you see that Napoleon kicked everyone's ashes except for the United States, which saw through the whole thing and still doesn't really understand the Metric System.

This theory also explains why the French took Napoleon back after his apparent defeat in the first Napoleonic wars. It took a second round of "military" conflicts in order to properly ensure the establishment of the Metric System by the academic elite within the "conquered" lands.

EVERYONE has their own personal conspiracy theory. This one's mine. You can't have it. :P

Don't know much about that in UK we still celebrate on 18th June over the humiliating defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo 1815. Napoleon's forces out numbered the British 3-1
We celebrate the Battle of Trafalgar 1805 as well when the outnumbered 2 -1 Royal Navy destroyed the French and Spanish navies . Great Days!!!

I think it was a long time ago and what is the point.

The question is why did France put up the Arc de Triumph so the foreign armies would know they had made it across the finish line.

But it is nice to know France won at least one battle. But did it win that war.

On top of Ipek's historical facts, we have to also mention that Napoleon's army was a colonialist army, and France could not keep all the land colonized at the end, as they have become a democratic country, and shifted from an empire to a state. They had a very tough time especially in Algerian Revolution War. I think, such colonial wars should not be the focus of today. Yet, the outcome or consequences of colonialism should be the discussion. And in 1799, there was no Republic of Turkey. It was another Empire, called the Ottoman Empire that Turks lived under the rule of. They have revolted and founded their own state called The Republic of Turkey in 1923.
