Additional Details He's going to several different countries (Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, England, etc.) and he's definitely bringing back gifts. I just don't know what I want from Europe that I can't get in L. A.

I would ask for 4 things :
1) a postcard (and hopefully one of the best he could find),
2) a magnet for the fridge (possibly with the country name and a landmark of some sort),
3)a mug (again with the city or country name and a landmark), and
4)a T-shirt (whats on it?...leave that up to him to decide)
These four items he could easily acquire anywhere in the world (so he won't spend hours searching for the gift), and you will have a collection of items to talk about in years to come as each has its distinctive value and a lot of "history" to it plus you can actually use them!
