The question cannot be answered in general. It depends on the country you plan to travel to. If it should be an European Union country or the United States or Canada you will be good to go since those countries only require the passport to be either valid on arrival or to be valid during the time of stay.
Should you however plan to visit any African or Asian non-Commonwealth countries you should better get it renewed since most of those countries require either a six month passport validation on arrival or the 6 month passport validation beyond your proposed stay and would not issue a visa on a passport that expires in October.
You should check the IATA database which is supplied by aircraft carriers so that passengers may check their passport validation and visa requirements.
taz and inspector clouseau seem to have it right, make sure you have a full 6 months left on the day you return back home

You should be able to travel, just be aware that some countries require a full 6 months left on your passport.
I would recommend applying for a renewal which shouldn't take long in processing since you already have. I applied for a passport for the first time in May 2008 and received it in less than 3 weeks when it should have taken 4-6. The same happened to a friend. So if you apply for a new one now you should receive it before April.

Sure - it hasn't expired yet - but it might be a good idea to start budgeting for a new one.

yes you can, and if you want to use the same passport you will have to return before the passport expires
Taz
It depends on when you travel in April and when it expires in October. On the day you return from your trip, there has to be a full six months on your passport
Inspector Clouseau
You're cutting it real close. Most international travel insists that you have 6 months remaining on your passport both leaving and returning.
Best would be for you to renew your passport and pay a little extra for it to be put on the 'fast approval track'.
Have a great trip and Hope this Helps

Of course you will thats why its a expire date you can travel before the expired date has long as you come back before october
