My wife and I are planning a trip to Turkey. Any ideas - see below...? |
Anyone who knows about Turkey or travel there, we welcome your expertise! We had planned two to three days in Instanbul, and then either a plane or train to Cappadocia where we hoped to spend another three days. After that, I really wanted to see the beautiful coast and go to possibly Bodrum/Oludeniz and spend another three days or so. Is this realistic? Also, how far is it from Cappadocia to Bodrum and how to best travel there? |

Have you checked out http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com ? The site is excellent.
My personal recommendation would be to get around by bus. Bus travel in Turkey is almost like flying - when it is dark outside you feel like you are on a plane due to the modern screens and entertainment systems, the personal attendants serving refreshments and the reclining seats.
BTW, it is quite far from Cappadocia to Istanbul. It is about 10 hours by bus. Travel time to Bodrum from Istanbul is similar. You would have to take a night bus or the plane to make your travel plans feasible. I personally would skip either Bodrum (including Ephesus) or Cappadocia - it is just too much. The above trip would require about 14 days to do it right and it would still be a tight fit. |

Turkey is quite large and the cities you mentioned would definitely be best reached by plane if you have a limited amount of time. You can fly on Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Cappadocia, then it takes about an hour by car to reach towns such as Urgup (which is famous for the cave hotels and beautiful rock formations). Bodrum and Oludeniz are quite far apart, but I would recommend Oludeniz or Marmaris/Icmeler over Bodrum. Bodrum is very famous for its nightlife, but it is not as naturally beautiful as Oludeniz, Marmaris, or Icmeler.
The major airports in South Turkey would be Dalaman (close to Marmaris or Oludeniz, about an hour or two by car or bus) or Antalya, which is a much larger city. You could fly from Cappadocia to Dalaman, for example, then take the inexpensive Havas bus service to Marmaris (costs 23 YTL per person) and stay in Marmaris. There are flights from Dalaman back to Istanbul daily, so you could then take your flight home.
I would recommend you try and extend your trip by a few days so you don't short change yourself visiting these beautiful places!
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip! |

First, I've been all over Turkey (Ankara, Samsun, Giresun, Istanbul, Antalya, Kalkan, Demre, Kayseri, Kas) with my husband who is from there. Bus systems in Turkey are very convenient since not very many people have cars, so take advantage. It is very affordable and convenient to use the bus system to Travel around Turkey. I've ridden from Antalya to Samsun, which was about 13-14 hours. The bus makes pit stops at a station where you can stop to eat and use bathrooms. I really reccomend Hotel Club Phellos in Kas, Turkey which is right in Antalya. They arranged a rental car for my husband and I. There are some great beaches there and Olu Deniz is only about 1.2 hours and the route is so easy and scenic, that the time flies by. Anyway Kas is romantic, beautiful and the shops and restuarants are awesome. The street is lined with boats selling day tours to the nearby island. I highly recommend these trips. It was the highlight of my vacation. I have so many reccomendations for you, I cant fit it all. Any more q's please ask. I'd be happy to help if i can. |

its quite far and it depends how much u are willing to spend but it is possible and it is definatly worth it. you can get a boat from istanbul to cappadocia and after spending time there go back to istanbul to get a flight to either bodrum or dalaman airport. bodrum is a lovely place but its definatly worth visiting oludeniz too. its pretty easy to travel around turkey as there are always frequent busses to each town/city and they are not expensive at all.
try www.lonelyplanet.com and search turkey.
also if your looking for beauty i wouldnt go to marmaris. but thats just my personal view. |

there is very little rail network in Turkey ié local trains and they go mainly to the larger cities...car hire would be good for getting to all those out of the way places however i am sure buses get to them too...they prefer the Euro to their own money ..we went on several coach trips and they all seem to include a stop off at either a carpet/leather/jewelery factory where there are more salesmen than visitors and they try to pressurize you into spending a lot of money.i was not impressed with this..you are asked to part with your money everywhere you go but to be honest..Turkey is not a cheap place to visit these days...can´t help with your other questions but i can say it is a wonderful country to look round and i was only in the antalya region |

Cities r not so close 2 each-other; the best way 2 travel is by train, fast by plane; & 2 see the coast line by boat; they have water-taxi & the best food is directly from the fisher-men....[drink "ONLY" bottled-water] |
