Noisy resorts to avoid on Crete?

Which resorts on Crete are the noisiest in the summer. Centres for 18-30 holidays. The Faliraki of Crete . I enjoy the quieter atmosphere of village life in Greece and would hate to choose the 'wrong' village.

You have already received various answers about the noisy resorts in Crete, so I will give you a different answer: where you will enjoy "village" life in Crete:
1. South-west: Paleochora, Sougia, Frangocastello, Plakias, Agia Galini
2. North-west: Kalives, Almirida, Plaka, Georgioupolis, Panormos, Bali
3.North-east: Agia Pelagia, Sissi, Elounda, Plaka, Mochlos, Sitia, Palaikastro
4. South-East: Makrigialos, Mirtos, Lentas, Matala

I lived and worked in Crete last summer. i stayed in Hersonnasis which is a young lively resort but also with families. But stay away from malia it's full of English and it's a kip. Try going to Gouves or Stalis which are quieter but not to much out of the way. And definatley take a trip to Heraklion which is just beside the airport but it's old city walls are beautiful to look at.There's loads of small villages untouched by all the tourists so rent out a car/moped for the day and enjoy!

Yanni 281 is spot on. I know NW Crete very well and his recommendations are sound. One to add is Loutro on the south coast immeadiately below Chania. No roads - so no cars. You arrive by boat from Sfakia.

Malia and hersonosis are definitely in that category

Try Alikianos. No hotels, no tourists. You can find a room with one of the locals.
Small - about 300 people live there, beautiful, definitely quiet. It's about 3 km away from Hania, which is a larger town for shopping and sightseeing, so you can even walk from Alikianos, which makes it a nice stroll.

Malia is very noisy.

I stayed in Hersonissos and that was really lovelly. There were bars and stuff down on the beachfront, but they werent wild ones.

Although Agios Nikolios is a very quiet village if thats what you are really after.

I'm afraid that 99% of Crete is very noisy because Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations...
However, you can visit the site of the Tourist Organisation at www.gnto.gr and see what options you have. The site is also available in English.

I could recommend you the Cretan Village of Grecotel (www.grecotel.gr) which is a big resort but when I was there, six years ago, it was quite quiet, despite the big number of children playing around...

Another solution is to rent a room at a village, directly by some villager and join their everyday life. How do you like the idea?

Hi avoid Malia, Aghios Nicholas, and at a push Hersonissos, I quite liked Hersonissos for the day, but any longer may have done my head in. The most beautiful place on Crete is Elounda. The southern east area is fantastic, and the most southerly place in Europe, so very hot. Its a wonderful island. Enjoy.

Hersonisos and malia r very loud

Faliraki is on Rodos - and yes, avoid it if you go there. On Creta do not even drive through Hersonissos, it was a lovely seaside village in the 70's and today it is an endless line of hotels, houses, bars, restaurants (which look like fast foods and do not actually serve any real greek cuisine). Try something in the south of the island, where are the best beaches anyway - and do rent a car, the island is huge and has a great variety of landscape, it is worth it to drive around (as long as you are careful, because the cretans cannot drive, even for greek standards).

Malia!!!!
Sissi is a very quiet, picturesque resort but not much of a beach. Agios Nikolias is soooo pretty, don't know how noisy it is though.
Elounda is pretty quiet
