Dr. Beemer

On the Greek map?

Is it Costantinople or Istanbul? Why or why not? And how you feel about it?

Constantinople.

Tuesday 29th May 1453 still burns in our hearts.

Tuesday is still our unlucky day of the week.

It is both. Cities of great history are being called with names which are just the variation of one. Noone objects to the fact that Thessaloniki is also called, in international level, Salonica.
As for those who "want it back" or "feel hurt" because of its "loss", let me remind them that:
1. Constantine, the founder of this city was a Roman Emperor, not a Greek one.
2. Bysantine Empire was multinational (just take a look at the origins of the emperors who could be Dalmatians, Armenians etc. The only one of real greek origin was Eirini the Athenean and reigned as a man being called "King of Romans"..
3. Orthodox Church cooperated with Mehmet II, (who, for your information was half Bysantine because of his mother) and Gennadios - Scolarios almost handed it over to him. So, Orthodox fanatics stop crying over the spilt (by the representives of your church) milk, and stop living with myths like the "sevret school", the "mass which has been stop and must go", the "pertified king" etc.
Also read about the role of Great Duke Notaras.
4. Just focus on the real problems, like the Skopje provocations and propaganda...They already stole a name (NOW) and a symbol (Alexander) and in a short while they'll steal even us, if you go on with what happened in the past..
5. Also focus on the so-called "Tsami question" which is a problem of TODAY...

Many yrs ago was Constantinople; capital of the Byzantine Empire. Now it's Istanbul. The first name comes from the Greek emperor Constantine. The second comes from the Greek words, "is tin poli" means "to the city". I don't forget the past, but I care for the future. I feel that history may change borders, but hearts and minds of people should remain united.

Missy
you are a provocateur

if you wonder so much, get a Greek map and check
i always wanted to respect you
but I'm sorry, you keep on making your dirty propaganda
people are trying to be friends
but with your questions, you make it impossible
why do u wonder about Istanbul
aren't you armenian. I'd wonder about yerevan if i were you

Hipparchos
Constantinoupolis of course, the city of Constantine. The word Istanbul means eis tin polin (greek for "to the city), so it is also a Greek name. Of course no greek would call Constantinople "Istanbul".

CONSTANTINOPLE

ele
the Greeks call it Constantinople...personally I think it's the same bc Insanbul comes from the phrase "eis tin Poli", eg "to Constntinople" which is what people used to say to show what grat city it was and how you could find everything there...no point in arguing over minor thing

Constantinople

Kimon
I agree with tes's answer I just want to add a Small yet crucial detail. In Greek when you are referring to "the City" "Η Πολις" you are explicitly referring to Constantinoupolis/Istanbul.

So if I say to someone "Ήμουν στην Πόλη" he will know that I was in Constantinoupoli and nowhere else.

In this context the name Istanbul is 100% Greek.

I often travel there and I use all three names : Constantinoupolis Istanbul Poli depanding to whon I talk and what language I use.

let me think back to 1453, ah that's right , Constantinople was conquered by the Turks who then renamed it Istanbul, well it seems like yesterday. How will I ever get used to that.
Empires come and go, if you look on any countries maps you will see names changes. But I am pleased that you have noticed that one. you re usually anti Turk. I won't use the word racist I will save that for Sera.
You guys make me laugh.
try booking a flight from Heathrow to Constantinople instead of Istanbul.
I expect you would be asked if you need any medical help

NIKOS THE PRESIDENT OF YAHOO
Costantinanople !!!

It's a greek city, as whole Anatolia...And someday, they will be obliged to give us back these lands...

Greek borders had reached as far as India and Egypt, in the past ( Alexander the Great)
