The CPE is one of several examinations certifying that a person has an excellent command (C2-level) of the English language. At present, seven C2-level certificates are recognised by the Greek government, including the CPE, ECPE ("Michigan"), Edexel (University of London), Trinity Exams, and the highest bands of TOEFL, TOEIC and IELTS. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the Greek population has taken such a certificate at one point of their life. This percentage is considerably higher among the younger segments of the population.
There are two things you need to remember about this statistic: (a) asking people in an English-speaking medium how many have the CPE is bound to give you exaggerated numbers because people lie, and because those who don't know English well enough cannot read the question. (b) While 10% percent of Greeks attained a C2 level certificate at some point in their lives, that doesn't mean that 10% speak perfect English. Since language ability deteriorates overtime, the language skills of people who have attained a certificate more than 3 years ago is somewhat suspect. A rough guesstimate of the number of true C2-level English users in Greece is approximately 4% of the population. |

I'd say that almost all young greek people aged between 14 and 30 years old have a Lower. The percentage for CPE is smaller but significant.
Personally, I have a certificate of Proficiency both from Cambridge and Michigan. |

I have the proficiency in English from the american university of Michigan.
Here in Greece there are 4 exams and degrees to certificate fluent speakers. From Cambridge, Michigan, Palso exams (i think it's from oxford) and state exams.
There are also TOEFL, TOEIC and some others.
Most greeks have the first certificate in english but many young university graduates need cpe for their studies and job. |

Don't get too excited, it is only that Greeks have a "passion" for diplomas, either in languages or in computers (nowadays) or in whatever written that proves they know something. It has nothing to do with the thirst of knowledge, it is only for practical reasons (everybody has it, so I also need it to get a better job or my child needs it to have a more secure future and so on). I agree with Marcus Cato, having a kind of a diploma (which is just a money making machine for the various foreign language institutes) does not mean much, unless you really use the language in real life, both written and spoken (studies, work, relations etc). |
