If I am being selfish, yes, I would like to see Turkey in the EU. But that would only have advantages for me going and staying in Turkey.
I know that many Turkish people are having mixed opinions and seeing how they are being treated, I don't blame them. I am really ashamed of my fellow EU citizens for having such low and uneducated thoughts about the Turkish people. It would have economical benefits, yes but in my eyes, Turkey is a very self reliant country that doesn't really need the EU. Many people see the islamic religion as a threat, but they have never even read the Koran. Besides religion and state are separated. Looking at other EU countries, that doesn't seem to be the case where too much is being controlled by the church. That is not the case in secular Turkey. It should actually be an example state for the EU.
I guess, the best way for Turkey would be to hold a referendum on whether the Turkish people really want to join the EU. |

I don't see any problem in Turkey joing EU, as long as some issues are solved before that. (Some disputes with Greece or Cyprus and some other criteria that EU orders). However dont assume that EU is a dream place or something, life with Euro currency is very expensive, all prices are doubled, tripled. Imagine something that costs 2 liras (1 euro ) in Turkey , with the Euro they will change the price 2 liras - 2 euro most people will not understand the difference but you can see that this product is doubled !lol Same as happened in Greece and other countries. I dont think that Muslim religion is a problem since there are tons of Muslims in EU already. But yes , its essential for every country to keep its uniqueness, us Europeans have become apathetic and quite snobbish, not caring for others, not even for our own home neighbor. I just hope Turks wont lose this excellent hospitality they currently have. x |

Further underscoring recent evidence that the economy is growing rapidly in Turkey so it sure will be a disaster for Turks if they accept the EU membership because EU has become terminally ill.For your information, my husband is Turkish and we have so many Turkish friends. They just don't want to join the EU.It is the fact that more than half of the population will say no to EU if there is a referendum.Hope this helps you to understand what Turks wants.

1) Republic Of Turkiye is a secular democratic country
2) Nobody cares what Eu has to say in international matters, they are like couple of rich kids with no brains
3) Eu is biased, racist and hypocrite
4) European Union-Turkey Customs Union is working against Turkey without full membership
5) http://www.turkishny.com/tr/ingilizce-haberler/3156-ecj-drops-visa-requirement-for-turks.html Get rdy for 100 million Turks walking over LOL first of all there arent 100 million people living in Turkey, second what makes you think all of the population would migrate to EU?? imo Turkey is the most beautiful country in the planet and the culture is the best and the food =) i ve never been outside of Turkey and not planning to be (i was born in Germany and my family move back to Turkey when i was 3 so that doesnt count :p )
6) European population is getting older and older they are gonna need us anyway in near future then we ll say "go f yourself"
7) Funny but true http://zombietime.com/europe_in_2015/ maybe not in 2015 :p
8) No i dont think we should ever join EU,its unwise, but we should get the good sides of Eu and implement it here |

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!
im TURKISH and im strictly against it!
the majority of the turks in turkey DONT want Turkey to join the EU, its the people in the government!
im a british turk, and believe me the majority of the brits here in the UK want out of the EU.
the EU is corrupt and has no benefits what so ever!
Turkey is not fit enough to join the EU, the treatment of kurds and human rights issues is horrific and needs sorting out.
our prime minster is the worst thing that has ever happened to Turkey, he seems more concerned over the headscarf ban in turkey rather than the poor and unemployed! he has made several speech's where he has slyly indicated that he doesn't want turkey to stay secular. this is against the majority of the turks will!
we need to sort out our own problems before we have the EU making other demands!
oww but to the racists who think turkey is not in europe! it is. turkey is half european half asian! get your facts right!
and for your benefit, your currently on the european section. |

It would benefit all parties if Turkey joined EU. But the attitudes of some Eurocrats and some citizens (see the top answer) are really hurtful. It gives the image of a racist Europe.
It seems the free roaming of Turkish people as well as Turkish goods is being solved within EU circles right now. Step by step approach has a better chance of success.
PS. Moon light is a non-Turk troll bent on putting Turks under an infavorable light. |

Obama has nothing to do with EU as Nikolas Sarkozy said.
As for the rest, I think Turkey has some unresolved issues before joining.(Except the Copenhagen criteria)
First and foremost the Cyprus issue needs to be resolved.Until then, not only the other countries but Republic of Cyprus will always object to Turkey's entrance. Its a practical theme, the veto from ROC will be a fact.
After that, at least things will be easier. |

I wonder why it's always the Greeks that like questioning the fact.
Ottoman Empire once had the same qualities with Europe (before all of you so-called European liberals start complaining, I should remark that I don't mean the same qualities with Europe as culture) but now lays in its place one of the strongest, most tolerant and most secular nations, Republic of Turkiye. Who needs Europe? A bunch of so-called liberals that are ruled by American influence, only beneficial to the poor Eastern European countries that are so much gratified for being called a European country that they find in themselves the courage to insult the country whose origins once ruled them!
And I just laughed when I saw Leos N's response to Totally Blunt, telling her that he's not being racist.
3) It will escalate terrorism in Western Europe by probably 500%.
If this is not racism, then what is?
How can you judge a nation and its people so ignorantly like this, that I don't understand.
But you know what? I really do see your point in saying so, considering the fact that IRA now has the highest rates in your Western Europe. |

All the countries that joined in, had to make changes, and they progressed.
It would have been very good for Turkey.
But, it'll never happen.

Hang on a second now..first of all Turkey is NOT an islamic country. You should have known that by now.Second, it is obvious that Europe will win in the long run if they accept Turkey into EU without laying down some sort of useless, worthless, illogical obligations on the table. If you ask my opinion then I would say that Turkey should never join the EU because it is so obvious that the EU is sinking and has lost so much by letting in some poor, undeveloped eastern European countries instead of letting Turkey in due to some illogical circumstances. |

Turkey is a very beautiful country with great culture and many archaeological relics, but culturally it's far more Asian than European. It's very Asian in mentality and culture. I personally think that Turkey should never join the EU. The risks far outweighs the benefits. |

no r u kidding me no! the germans didnt get off that easily after the holocaust but they want turkey (who started the armenian?greek genocide) to join? thats unfair. why should turkey be forgiven for something like that so easily. they cant be off the hook just like that! it angers me so much! sure its beautiful and they have an... interesting culture but they cant join something that promotes justice wen they r still trying to bring down other countries |

turkey is one of the melting pot country in the world.so that's why asking something to turkish citizens is can be misleading.but i can say that there are two parts which is the dominant.one part is really want to get in the EU and the other part is they're totally ignore joining the EU.but if we need to compare them one part is really well-educated, modern, open-mind people and we want to join it but the other part is not ready for that and they know that if they have to join the EU ,they have to change something in their life.but they don't want it.so that's why we're not gonna join it.maybe in 2030.
i'd really sad if somebody think we're not gonna join the EU because we're muslim.because if somebody says that, i'd have thought about him/her European situation and wanna say them come and after talk about Turkey. |

There are political, sociological and economical reasons. Geography is no reason for Turkey not to be a member, since countries like Cyprus are further away than Turkey is and more than half of the europeans don't even know where they lye. Europe is striving to be a super power
and Turkey is placed best if it kinda could get its feet in there. Life would surely become even more expensive but one needs his place in a league in the World and there is not an alternative for Turkey at the moment. The arab league is so weak and dependent that you cannot rely on any one of them. The turkic republics in Asia are already given. They don't have any importance in that part of the World and Turkey is not developed enough to lead them. So what can you do, wait for another 50 years for your time to come or catch one of the trains that seem to be running for the World's leadership. There is not much of an alternativ for Turkey really. |

in my opinion it's not needed to discuss EU membership of Turkey at the moment most of the turks in here including me are happy with current situation the one important reason Europe has behind all this EU criterias Turkey would be the one of the biggest states in EU Some EU citizens also worry about this first muslim majority country Some people would for sure be happy if i said Turkey is not part of europe but truth is Turkey one of the few countries in Europe to become a member and a founder of Council of Europe in 1949 |

It is funny to see ignorant 3. rate citizen of europeans thinkign they are so aristocratic and making comments on such things.
1- Turkey has got Land in Europe, it doesnt matter how much land, the size of the land they have in europe is bigger than the size of greece.
2- Turkey is not an islamist country, it is democratic secular republic.
3- Germans, Dutch and English people are trying to find a way to buy home in turkey and immigrate mediterian side since it is not borign like all the time raining england and germany. So it will be betetr for them to do that ;)
4- The formation of the european union is based on economic reasons, not related to ethnic or religious reasons. Most of europeans are mixed anyway. How many of you can tell that you are real english or german?
5- Turkey's population is not 100 million, it is 79 million. Most turks will not leave a country liek turkey and immgirate to england, germany etc. They are individualistic, boring countries with asocial people.
6- If turkey joins the eu, it will be the biggest country in Eu and will have more vote in Eu parliement than germany and france so it is very normal low class nationalist europeans dont like that idea.
7- Before turkey can join the union, it has to complete the criterias. I do not personally think Turkey is ready to join Eu right now but if it keep the good job up , it will be eligible to join in 5 - 7 years. |

I don't know enough about Turkey or Obama's comments to have an informed opinion. However, the little I've read suggests that Turkey is the party wanting to join the EU and Obama is backing their bid.
From an economics and political stand point, Turkey joining the EU could have a stabilizing effect on Turkey's economy. This could have a stabilizing effect on their politics. This in turn could make them a more effective ally when it comes to dealing with other Muslim nations. Again, this is all speculation based on general knowledge and the VERY little I know about the specific issue. |

You said "My opinion is that if Turkey joins the EU, it would loose its uniqueness. They are much better off staying as they are....hopefully away from Europe. What you think?"
I couldn't agree more with you on that
but let me also comment that what Obama wants is not relevant with EU because he is not European. As most of us know, the USA wants Turkey in the EU to have there another American influensed state like the UK and Poland.
Also the EU does not need to prove anything to Islam and other Muslim nations, you really need to clear that in your mind. Europe owns nothing to Muslims. Nothing.
The Muslim countries that you mention are (as we say in Greek) the exception which validates the rule. Plus Kossovo is not a country but an occupied land and Bosnia is half Christian. If Albania is your example of a Muslim European state then I rest my case.
and I fully agree with Leos N. |

Turkey should not join Eu . Why ?
In countries in Eu, The young population is decrasing and old population is increasing fast. Conflictions between countries where are in eu are getting worse and worse.Unemployment is increasing. Why are we trying to join them ? here are the facts of Eu. Turkey is freer than Eu.We have a national culture and belief combination.
Starting process of joining eu's aim was to stop making association between Turkey with other Turkish countries and societies which called Turkish union in the east develop. When all countries even countries where they conquered their independece very new are being accepted to Eu, Turkey is dallied with some formal and unnecessary laws like being banned Kokoreç.These accepted countries cannot be compared with Turkey in terms of economic, cultural, young population, trade and standard of living.I think Turkey has more significant problems then joining Eu.For example, Karabakh is under illegal armenian invasion and there are
over 1 million living Turks there. I think Noble Turk Nation will not want to be a part of Eu when they accept us to join since we will be better than each European country thanks to our subterranean resources, young population and our unique nobleness.
Best regards. |
