I don't know about the weather but here are some things I learned.
Though it sounds enticing, the red light district is really kind of creepy, and not a whole lot different from most cities in America - everyone knows where to go to buy pot, but you don't go there because the neighborhood is bad and scary ESPECIALLY if you are by yourself. We did go and see some of the "merchandise" for sale, i.e., the hookers stand like mannequins in store windows. It's very unsettling and sad.
All of the WW2/Holocaust places and sites were interesting and worth it. Also the art museum where you can stand a half inch away from an actual Rembrandt - very cool.
One last thing, although it sounds interesting, the Jewish Historical Museum is as boring as unbuttered toast.
Have a blast, be careful.

Stay at a Youth Hostel and you will meet people to hang with.

bon voyage. amsterdam is a lovely city. in fact it is rated as one of the best 10 cities in the world -- to live in. i was there. bored --you will not be...I can assure you. read the following: go to dan square during day time..hang around but don't smoke what they do...just watch people interact -- during rainy days go to the museums...all full of dutch master pieces...spend some good time there..if it is sunny -- walk around their parks and their canals...but dont' jump in -- not yet...at night...try one of the discos -- very close to your hotel/motel/student dormitories (youth hostel). make sure you hang around the right circle of friends...don't over-drink -- be always sober. bon voyage, enjoy.
ps. wear woolen stuff --it could be quite chilly when it gets cold -- since it is damp and cold...watch out, but go anyhow.

It might be cold around that time. Bring a camera and a tripod if you want to take pictures. People love to smoke there. You can buy drugs and coffee from the local shops.
Amsterdam is only about 4hrs away from Paris by train.

Check out http://www.vacation-tips.net There are some great tips for traveling alone. I don't think you will be bored, but definitely look into activities at your hotel and things like that.

Whenever I get back to Holland from vacation, I'm usually saddened by the weather. Buut you get used to it. Especially if you have a bunch of things to do.

For cheap and good accomodation check out www.shelter.nl The employees are helpful too, and the hostel itself has a bunch of activities.

In Amsterdam you could visit several museums. Google for info on the Anne Frank house, the Rijksmuseum etc. And just walking around the city center and shops is always fun. The big shopping street is called "Kalverstraat" by the way. So you could ask around for that, or just look for it on a map.

You can also take boat tours in Amsterdam. There are a bunch of different ones, so you might want to walk around a bit first to find the cheapest one. Or maybe ask some people who went on it if it was any good.

From Amsterdam Central station you can catch trains to pretty much anywhere in Holland. It'll be worth it to get out of the Amsterdam area and visit some other places. You could try finding some things you're interested in (museums, concerts, cities etc.) and just catch the train.

A places worth visiting is "Scheveningen". It's a beach town with a little boulevard with shops, bars and restaurants. Most of them are open in the winter too, just not all of them. To get there take the train to Den Haag central station, then take Tram 9 to Scheveningen.

Have fun!

i would definitely go, you can always find people to hang with if you want to, i have wanted to go to amsterdam for years, but for one reason or another havent been able to go, i have decided to save more money and do it (probably by myself as well)- you only live once! go for it! i definitely don't think you will be bored, have fun if you decide to do it. sally

It already is a terrible weather now! Raining on and off, very gloomy. Nov will be like this plus much colder. From the question you ask, it sounds you are not really excited about coming here. You should do reasearch on the country and find out if there is anything that interests you or not. If there are none, you should stay home and watch MTV.

Texas Cowboy
I went at that time and loved it.
I brought an overcoat but did not always need it because it is located close to the water and was not that cold.
See the museums, the red light district, they have drug bars that sell pot (I was not interested), raw fish stands along the bay, cheese made at nearby Ghouda, boats in the canals, stay at a bed and breakfast for good rates and good food.
You will have a blast!!

Depends on how outgoing you are. Even if you go alone there is other people there that you can hang out with. I went when I was in the military so I didn't get to try some of the things I would have liked to. At least if you go hang out at the coffee shops you can forget that you are alone for awhile. When I was there I definitely found out that I would have had a better time alone than with others. That is just my opinion though. I would still go because you never know you might not get the chance again? Germany is so beautifull and the people seemed alot friendlier there than here in the states. The weather can be quite cold at times but during their summers it is great. There is so much to take in. Make sure you stop and take a look at how well the landscape and buildings are kept up. There taxes are different than ours. Alot of there tax dollars go into keeping up there environment and landscaping. Also if you rent a car definitely take a ride on the autobahn. I think you will have a good time with or without friends.

Seriously, I think going alone will be better than going with others that will only hold you back from doing whatever you want to do when you want to do it. Just bring a camera so your friends beleive you when you tell them about all the sh*t that you got into. There are plenty of hostels around the area for you to stay and meet others. It helps if you speak dutch but not necessary. There is melting pool of diversity there.
