No, they are completely different. I am polish, and I speak german as well. And I find there is no similarity.
Polish is a slavic language, like Czechs and Slovakians, we can understand one another, as well as Russian. Polish, Czech, Slovak and Russian are all very similar. But, Russian is very different in spelling. The alphabet is completely different.

For example:
'Good Day'
In Polish: Dzien Dobry
In German: Guten Tag

'How are you?'
In Polish: Jak sie masz?
In German: Wir geht es dir?

Anyways, as you can see, although Germany and Poland are neighbouring countries, our languages are completely different.

Have a Good Day!

billrussell42
no, they are totally different languages.

King Allen...I hope you don't mind a gal answering your question. Here's an analogy...is the English language similar to the Kenyan language? No...they are world's apart...so are the German and Polish language. Though the Jewish Yiddish language derives from the Germanic language...they would be more similar.

Also, depending upon what was going on in Poland during a particular era, a certain percentage of Poles can speak that language. For instance, my father was a child during Nazi-occupied Poland from '39 to '45....he can understand German but not speak it (he's more familiar with English). While present day Pole..unless they take the German language in school or are of that ancestry...more than likely don't know the German language.

Saysie
Polish is a waaaaayyy different language from German.
Polish is a Slavic language (similar to Czech, Slovakian, Russian), while German belongs to Germanic group of languages (such as Dutch or English).

nemeczek
Polish and German are like day and night. In Polish "Niemiec" means "a German". "Niemiec" is derived from the word "niemy" which means "mute". When more than a thousand years ago Western Slavs (Poles) moved west, they encountered tribes speaking a language they could not understand at all - hence they called them "Mutes". It was different when Slavs were meeting other Slavs - their languages were very similar.

Yes ,I can speak German , Polish is not even similar to German .

Valerie
LOL!! NO. Polish is considered one of the Slavic languages, it's most similar to Russian. That's why russian and polish people understand each other fairly well.
