Would help more if I knew where you are from. I am from Portugal and lived all my life in Portugal. I lived from north to south of the country already.
Some things we are proud of:
- wines
- cheese
- pork meat
- music (Fado)
- sea food
- football (major teams: F.C. Porto, S.L. Benfica, Sporting C.P.)
We are a very pacific country, our main supports of life are commerce and turism. Our major sport is football, but we are stronger in rink hockey (15 times world champions and 20 times european champions). In terms of freedom, we have a big political and press freedom. Our major issues might be unemployment and health care, so be careful when comenting about someone that can't find a job or has health problems.
We are very proud of our history and how we built this country, also very proud about our football and national team (Portugal).
If you like pork meat or sea food, then you will most probably like our cousine. If you like wines or cheese, this country is also a good choice.
About doing well with others... be polite with the elders, if you don't speak portuguese, try to learn simple words like "obrigado" (thank you"), majority of elder people don't speak anything else except portuguese. Portugal is a very sea driven country.
Like any other country... there is much more to talk about, but it's hard to do it in a simple monologue. I just hope this helped you a bit.
Good luck,
Dumno |

To know about Portugal you need to be Portuguese and being raised there not that my father is Portuguese or the man across the street. We Portuguese are good people we work hard and we are friend of our friend, yes we have our problems but we one of the oldest country in the world.
don't try to change the way they live sometimes Americans make bad comments about other cultures, Be open minded about the culture and you will be OK and having fun
good luck |

I have been to Portugal. For the most part the Portuguese people are the most warmest, most helpful, most friendly people I have ever met. As for the second part of your question a don't is never ever compare there way of life, their culture, and their language to the Spanish or Spain. That would be an insult as comparing the northern part of the USA to the Southern part of the USA. I am from the Southern part of the USA and if you have never lived here you would not understand. " "The South shall rise Again"!!!!! |

Portuguese people are individualist.
But, we expect the Portuguese State to be collectivist, but not socialist, or worse, comnunist... just... paternalist, in a good and tolerant way... (maybe, we are lazy... in our own country...)
In terms of culture, history and "National-feelings" we are a united people, more than most of the other countries in the world. (it's probably that almost 99,9% of the portuguese don't want to hear about national fragmention, like Spain...)
Unless you have a good friendship with a portuguese, don't criticize Portugal's culture and habits.
(well, use your common sense. If you're cheated somewhere, of course you can criticize...) |

They humble and quiet peoples. Most of the population here in Fall River, MA is portuguese and they're melancholy and pacifist. But they have the best seafood restaurants in the state. |

collectivist defenatly
u should support the lisbon soccer team benfica, if u wanna make friends fast
and don't go buy a porto or other shirt cause if u do, no one will talk to you.
the life in there is kind of differnt than in the USA.
portuguese people don't have it easy
and there isn't so much time for fun
so don't go there and feel supperior than anybody else
and don't support bush or the war
deffenatly not
then u'll be fine. i can't tell u everything, u gotta life this experience when u get there
u gonna love it
and if u can go visit porto. it's really pretty too. u gonna like it too
well good luck
and keep posting questions when u there so i can help u with anything |

The culture in Portugal is collectivist,
and the system is very bureaucratic,
and elitist.
Up to very recently, the Portuguese
regime was an oligarchy |
