If you a backpacking(staying in backpackers hostels) around Europe then a big backpack would be the way to go. A good suitcase with wheels is also ok. If you have a small backpack for just day trips, be very aware of all the security going on now. Some shops/tourist buildings won't allow you to have your backpack on your back and they will check contents.
Always carry travel documents/wallet in a safe place as in certain places in Europe there are a lot of beggars who are very good at robbing. Europe is fabulous though and you will be sure to love it.

Depends on how long you will be gone and how you are traveling. Will you be traveling by plane, train, bus. car, or hitch hike? You can get luggage with wheels in almost any size these days. If you are traveling by plane, you have to check almost everything now, so there is not such an advantage to backpacks.

well i live in london and i visit paris often and you can spot tourists a mile off with backpacks. always knocking into you on the tube. annoying

German TV regularly shows info news reports demonstrating how easy backpacks are to grab items from. Suitcase is better.

Definitely a backpack. If you're planning on travelling around for anything more than a week, a suitcase will drive you crazy and you'd find yourself binning it and buying a large rucksack anyway. If however, you are travelling 'in style' (hotel to hotel) then you'll be leaving it in the room most days so it doesn't matter. Tips? Respect local customs, don't go tip-crazy, don't carry all your money in one place (or at once if possible), buy an all-europe rail travelcard, make sure your mobile will work on european signals, take a european socket/plug converter....oh, and enjoy it.

I'm Bored...................
I'd probably take a back-pack because its easier to carry things on your back than carry them all the time, I think its more convenient for walking as well........have fun!

Yes, backpacks are so useful as they keep your hands free. Also means you can pack more if needed.
England is good for historical locations.
Spain is good for a sun tan and drinking.
France is errrrr...... oh yeah Disneyland Paris, the Moulin Rouge and the place used to inspire the Phantom of the Opera.

You can backpack through parts of Europe. i would suggest getting a train ticket thats good for a month and getting reservations for any overnight train rides. Also, you will always look like a tourist if you have your backpack on, so don't get caught alone in a shady area or a dark alley. There are youth hostels all through out Europe and they are the cheapest place to stay overnight at in Europe. Hotels are a little more expensive but also an option. Again, I suggest getting reservations before showing up at a hostel or hotel because they'll send you away if they're full. One more tip: They farther into eastern Europe you travel the more dangerous it gets. Russia for example has a mafia that controlls the police everywhere except Moscow and St. Petersburg. Stick to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, Holland, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, Luxemburg, Lichtenstien, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the other Western European countries I forgot.

Try Portugal!!!

Here we accept almost anything... and you might be able to take a backpack... however... it might depend on which airline you will travel... but Portugal... is a great placee to meet... and travel!... We have plenty beautiful plac to visit as cultural too!

Have a nice trip.

Hey if its easier for you then yeah why not.

Visit your library and check out some videos on travelling abroad. Most do recommend that you try to travel as light as possible. A rolling duffel bag is actually the best choice, as you can roll it behind you or carry it like a suitcase. Also take a backpack for day-trips.
