No I still have to speak English, but I would try to speak German.

No we speak danish...we are danish who live in denmark. We do not understand dutch and it is also very hard for most of us to understand german and swedish....we only use it if we travel or live by the borders. Holland is no where near us. It's a 10 hour drive or more by car.
So pretty sure all the Danes who answer will get this question right.

Boudreaux
They speak Danish. It would be doubtful that they would know Dutch. They would most certainly know English (and very well). Chances are they will understand German too. Dutch is close, and they might could make a few things out. But I would guess that they would simply ask, "English?"

Hope you like it there. The Danes are really cool and friendly people. =)

I am Dutch, and I found Danish hard to understand.
Funnily enough, Norwegian is much easier for me even though it is spoken farther away.

I often wonder what kind of geography lessons they give in the USA, (and in England.....)

d_cider1
I suppose you could, but Danish is the language of Denmark. That and English.

Some people do speak Dutch in Denmark or at least do understand it if you speak slowly. Especially if they have knowledge in German. It also goes for the Norwegians as well as some people in Sweden.

No they speak danish. My husband is danish and no body ever seems to know where Denmark is on the globe. They think denmark is either the capital of Sweeden, or they think its Holland.I lived over there for two years and my dad called me little dutch girl. Lol I think its funny but it drives my husband insane.

Sorry. Absolutely no Dutch is spoken, nor understood in Denmark, though the languages are related. (Some Danes are actually able to read some Dutch, though.)

We speak Danish (VERY close to Swedish and Norwegian) as our mother tongue. But being such a small language area (5 million native Danish speakers) we HAVE to learn something else to be understood. :o)

That something is English which most people speak more or less fluently. Some people know German (fluently in the southern part of Jutland), some know French and others Spanish.

So come up with a clear and slowly spoken English and you will manage just great. Enjoy the trip. :o)

Denmark Scorpio
Most danish people Eat danish, Sleep Danish and Speak Danish.

Most people know how to speak English - some more fluently than others.

Some people speak German, but not everyone as german isnt obligatory in schools any more - instead some know French.

A Danish person - depending on who it is - should be able to understand a bit Dutch - but not that much and not very well.

?
Nej du tale dansk..
No danish
