That's really not long enough of a layover to leave the airport. The red light district is quite near the city center, but you'll need at least half an hour each way to get into the city from the airport. |

Train run every ten mins from schipol to central station, the journey takes about 30 mins and the red light is about a five min walk after that, but getting trough customs might make it a bit too difficult for you.
Schipol airport is one of the best in the world so you should be able to entertain yourself if you don't make it |

Typically the trains take 20 minutes and run every 10 to 15 minutes. Taxis are slower and so much more expensive.
From Central Station - train station, that is, it is a 10 minute walk to the red light district.
So, assuming buying a ticket/waiting for next train is 10 minutes plus 20 minutes journey plus 10 mins walking you've used 40 minutes already. Add to this, you don't know where you are and this will hardly be fast. 2 x 40 minutes = 80 minutes, and there's no time to look around or do what you want to do really.
Don't board Dutch trains without buying tickets, otherwise you'll get a large penalty. The Schipol train ticket office is notorious for having long lines and is slow (you pay a surcharge for buying via staff, not the machines). Otherwise, you'll need Euro coins for the ticket machines, I think the fare is 3 Euro's 40/60 cents approx.
It's your call... sounds a bit dodgy should trains get delayed or cancelled and you miss you next flight. And the thinnest amount of time to do anything once you arrive in central Amsterdam. Stay over, if you can rearrange your schedule.
I lived in Amsterdam, but never used any of the working ladies there. It's a wonderful city with tons more to see and do.
Good luck! Rob |

Just watch out the taxi prices you'll need a second morgage. But's the airport is a good way from amsterdam cenral. You might just make it. |

The train takes about 20 minutes and is much cheaper than a taxi but because your time is very limited you might want to use the taxi. The red light district is a weird place to see - I did not take part because I'm a happily married man - but it looked off da hoek! |

No no no man ! Alter your itiniary (spell it ?) and stay for a couple of days in The Dam. You must do the Coffee Shops etc. And..the ladies around the old Centrum District are sweet as.... I know a good few of them. (only sad sickos call them with such awful titles.... they're usually frightened of such realistic people that is why.) Amsterdam really is a must see and that short dash won't be worth doing at all ! Get off and do a stay there cos it is well worth it !! Do some "nearly get trashed by a bike", some herbs, cookies and space cake ! Miss your flight .... I do that regularly but only short flights and it's a laugh being a bit chaotic ! Yeah give The Dam the full agenda man ! |
