Should I buy a car in Greece, Bulgaria, or Germany and bring it to Turkey? |
I am an ex-pat living in Turkey. The cars a very expensive here, but the country does allow for foreign people to bring cars in from abroad.
Does anyone know if it is a good idea to do this?
Also, what country is the best choice? Nearby countries like Bulgaria and Greece... or Germany? Is driving from Germany feasible?
Any advice would be great! |

In order for a foreigner to bring a car into the country they have to get a bank guarantee letter for the market value of the car.
You will have to pay an annual fee to the bank to maintain that guarantee which can be quite expensive. When you decide to leave the country you will have to either export the vehicle or sell the car to another eligible foreigner or turn in into customs but there is a considerable abandonment fee for that.
Germany would be the best value for vehicles but it's a long drive. Therefore, Turkish cars usually maintain their value pretty good from year to year.
You may want to refer to the below site to get all the necessary information about importing a vehicle:

You may pay less for the car but the amount you pay by bribing the Bulgarian border officers would outweigh the money you saved by buying the car for a cheaper price. |

Have you tried Dubai? There are lots of cheap and quality cars on sale. The entire process from purchase to shipping is hassle free (You can have it done in a day) and the cost for shipping to Turkey would only be about 1,000 USD tops. |

Paying the minimum is a good idea , but that wont save you any thing on the duties when you enter Turkey , turkey has a set duty payable for a certain item regardless where it comes from |

Driving in from Germany is certainly feasible, there are thousands of Turkish families who make the trip back and forth each summer. Routes run through Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria as well as through Italy and Greece (ferry Ancona-Patras).
The problem is not driving from Germany to Turkey, but buying a car in Germany as a non-EU resident. There is a lot of hassle and redtape involved in this, which is why there are specialised used car dealers who buy old cars for export and sell them outside the EU.
Your best bet is to make contact with such a car dealer in Germany (quite a few of them are Turkish) and let him deal with the paperwork. |
