Should I go to Europe? Or just move away?

I need some opinions guys. I am having a bit of a dilemma. I have been planning to move from Kansas to Portland for the last several months. I am waiting for my lease to be up in September. But I've been thinking a lot lately about backpacking through Europe. I will be apartment free, I am quitting my job anyways (for the move) and I recently came into some inheritance so money is not an issue. If I go to Europe I would plan on staying there at least two months. When I come back I would move to Portland. Do you think that sounds like too much? To come back from this incredibly long trip and move to a brand new city right after? I just don't know if the timing will ever be this perfect again! What would you do? Trip of a lifetime or a cross country move?

go to Europe, you may never get the chance again, so take it now...you will not regret it

Times like this I would invoke the 'death-bed' rule: imagine you are on your death-bed mentally going over your life. Are you going to want to say to yourself at this moment, "Gee, I'm glad I didn't go on that trip to Europe when I had the chance and moved straight to Portland", or are you going to be able to say to yourself, "Gee, I'm glad I went on that trip to Europe when I had the opportunity." Your call.

Trip of a lifetime for sure.

Go on the trip then move! For sure! And enjoy Europe. Not many people have the opportunity to do that kind of thing, so just do it!!!

Backpack throught Europe, it's awesome. You're moving to a new Portland anyway just take the long scenic route....you will not regret it.

2 months is incredibly SHORT for a backpacking trip. You should stay longer! Go to Europe but stay for 6, 9, 12, 24 months! If you really want it to be the trip of a lifetime, push back moving for a little bit longer. Portland will always be easy to move to, but you have the money and the desire now to travel. Do it.

Go backpacking through europe it is a once in a life time experience and you will not regret. portland will be there when you get back and it wont change much. be prepared to experience many different culures nice people and good times oh and be sure to stop in amsterdam for a few days at least great cit and great coffee shops. have fun!

You might never get the chance again.

I understand your obvious concerns, but if I was you, I'd be so excited by the prospect. You should treat it like a long holiday and then a completely fresh start. Make sure you define when your travelling ends and your new life in the US begins.

You'll have a wicked time. We're very friendly over here.

I live in Portland. I think you are better off moving here first because its very European compared to Kansas. That way you will be better prepared for an extended time in Europe. And from a practical side, you should move to your new home first and THEN go on vacation. JMHO.

Do You Have The Funk?
Backpacking is really hard work, especially two months. You'd need about $6000 for just travel(get a europass), hostel stays, and meals. It's not what it seems like in the movies. If you go, you need at least 2-4 friends with you, just so you won't get taken advantage of. And then once you got back you'd feel exhausted, and then have to move. it's not a picnic. You'd best move first, get settled in a bit, and wait till next summer, because winter backpacking would be terrible.
