Should Turkey join EU?

of course Turkey shouldnt, because every time the EU finds another reason not to let Turkey join the union. they promised many things about negotiating, but, now, it is clear that they are totally lier. now, they are still talking about so-called armenian genocide, about cyprus which is irrelevant to joinning issue of Turkey to the EU. many of these problems have to be solved in United Nations, but, still, they still find some excuses and apparently, they are going to put us off with these silly trumped-up excuses for a long time until our reactionist government understand that. i think, Turkey shouldnt try to join the EU but, try to have good relationships and set an union with eastern countries, like Russians or Chinese. the EU! do not forget! the loser wont be Turkey!

to be honest, I didn't want Greece to enter EU too..

cause we lost a lot from this

a lot of our identity, culture, policy, and freedom

but in this times we are living,

it is impossible for a country to survive alone

financially and politically

so coming to Union is necessary - not desirable but necessary

I believe it cant be done differently

I dont think so, but just because the cultures are different, an the mentality is different..They will not accept to be adapted to the western mentality, and also the western people will find it difficult to incorporate them. I take the example of my country, Greece, many times they take us to the courts. We are a little bit orient, and we cant be conformed with the strict rules.

Irmak
I don't support it so much as a Turk. Actually Europeans too..But it can bring some good things to Turkey.

you dont lose identity if you join the EU, it just means you gain another one.

Turkey should not currently join the EU because one of the ideas of expansion is to bring each country to a similar economic level. I believe the Economist said that GNP per person would lower 17% if Turkey joined this year.

I believe the reasons against Turkey are the same as for Ukraine, they are simply not developed enough ecnomically and given the effects of the past two expansions have not been fully felt yet, the EU would be wise not to continue with ANY further expansion.

If Ukraine gets invited but Turkey not, then you can rightly claim it is a cultural difference. The cultural difference is a weak arguement, after all, how much do Finland and Greece have in common?

expatturk
No. While there may be a few benefits, if Turkey joined the Eurpean Union, it would lose more than it gained. As a whole, the economy would suffer. Much of what lures tourists to this fascinating country would be lost to rules and regulations affecting cutlural uniqueness.

No it's not in Europe.

I think the question is whether or not the EU should accept Turkey.

In my own estimation, Turkey is an Islamist country masquarading as a "Christian" nation.

Part of joining the EU has to do with women's rights, education, and other requirements that initiate reforms in government. I look at the kinds of things Romania had to do, with respect to getting rid of the archiac Russian bureaucracy, and implementing a more democratic form of government.

From what I am hearing and reading, this is an area where Turkey is woefully lacking. Clerics still run the show, honor killings still take place, and women are all but denied higher education.

That's not what the EU represents.

Turkey should not even dream about EU after Hrant Dink's death. Its up to them to get to European standards with womens rights, human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, open cyprus, accept Armenian Genocide, Get rid of the nationalists who damage the image of turkey worldwide, revise code 301. Good luck Turkey.

Μακεδών
No because you suck.
