Hmm...
Well, it has maintained very close relations with the Western World ever since its foundation in 1923 (from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire). It does have a portion of its land located in the Balkans.
But I would say that there are several Human Rights issues that need to be addressed before it accedes, particularly its treatment of Kurdish people in the southeastern portion of the country.
I'd say, at this point, Turkey is better suited for a special relationship with the EU, as opposed to membership. Once its human rights issues clear up, then it will most likely fare a far better chance. |

no we shouldn't.
as a country we need to overcome certain issues like unemployment, human rights etc in order to then join the EU.
and anyway, i live in britain and its part of the EU, and trust me many of us hate it.
the EU is corrupt. |

Sorry but, Turkey is a beautiful country. But it would be more beautiful if it was NOT part of the European Union. |

The actual Economic situation of the EU isn't good so the expansion is not a good idea, but in the future I think Turkey should join the EU, even Cyprus is not geographically part of Europe... |

I dont see any other pathway for Turkey in our present day than to join the EU in the future.Since 1923 the object has been to modernise, progress and improve our country, almost all Turks would agree with this, this is what we want,as any person with a brain would want.
Where else is there to go? Are we going to stay in economic limbo for the next 100 years just because some people dislike a muslim country being in thier Christian club? Do you understand the sheer amount of debt Turkey is in? Do you know the trade barriers Turkey has compared to other EU members? The pay decreases Turks have compared to everyone else?
This isnt about wanting to be Europan or non-European.This is about wanting to progress the Turkish people and country.
Yes there are plenty of anti-social Europeans who would dislike us joining thier little club, but Turks should be following the road which offers an improved life,a safer life to.Why on earth would you look to the middle eastern nations for any of that?
The backward attitude of the ottoman period still exsist in Turkey, the foolish identity pride.Just drop it as it doesnt help you getting paid more or selling your goods for a higher price,it just alienates you.
Pre-Ataturk= Turks living in houses of mud brick and obeying a lifestyle based on the Arab world, and it got the average Turk nowhere. He was poor, backward in thinking and unwilling to adapt to new ideas.
Post-Ataturk= Almost drastic improvement in all areas, education, language, literacy, rule of law, arts and music ect ect,and all this was inspired by the idea of enlightenment, which came from the west and from Europe.
It did us good, and was the best thing ever to happen to Turks.Whats wrong with trying to keep up with the progress of the world by joining in with this Union which would improve the lifestyle of the Turkish people? |

No because within a few years after joining they will be expected to use the Euro for their currency. I have a friend in Germany that said when they started accepting the Euro (5 plus years ago) the prices on almost everything practically doubled in price. I also have friends in Romania and Bulgaria that tell me even though they have joined the EU but yet have not officially started using the Euro, the costs are going up. As a sort of a side note even though the Euro is not the official currency yet, it is often the most accepted. Of course there are other reasons Turkey should not join but to me this is a major reason why the should not. |

Yes , if its in the best interest of turkey. But keep in mind that European union is apparently a Christian block and when it comes to Turkey's bid to join the block, EU think and see differently.
in my opinion whether Turkey join the EU or not , Turkish people should not forget their identity, culture their values and recognition. |

EU has no future in the 21st century by itself
they may get a chance though if they get Turkey by their side
I suggest them to BEG Turkey for joining in EU
Turkey will do the necessary when going ges tough though |
